Marriage does not have bearing on my work: Vidya Balan

Posted: 07 Jun 2013 11:21 AM PDT

"I am enjoying being married," says Vidya Balan, adding that marriage neither put the brakes on her prizewinning acting career nor does it have any bearing on the kind of roles she would choose in future.

Work-life balance is possible for the actress because the Parineeta girl has found a supportive husband in Siddharth Roy Kapur, managing director of Studios, Disney UTV, with whom she tied the knot at a private ceremony in December last year.

"I am enjoying being married. The good thing is that at the end of the day you get to see each other," she told IANS in an exclusive interview.

Praising Siddharth, she added: "He is very supportive. In fact, I did The Dirty Picture (2011) after we got together."

The 35-year-old doesn't feel marriage will alter the kind of roles she would take up.

"I don't think marriage really has a bearing on that. Both of us respect what the other does. I may choose a role which I feel very strongly about, and he may decide to produce a film which he feels very strongly about. You just respect each other's profession," she said.

And she is willing to do another Dirty Picture.

"The definition of boldness may not be The Dirty Picture. Even Ghanchakkar is a bold role. I believe that there is an extraordinary in the ordinary and I feel that is what films are exploring these days vis-a-vis different characters."

"Having said that, it could be another Dirty Picture also and if I feel strongly about it, I will go and do it," she said.

Post-marriage Ghanchakkar shooting and promotions have been keeping her busy. And she said that she is "enjoying straddling these two worlds".

"At the same time I don't have unreal expectations from myself. There are times when there will be slip ups..."

Also busy with Shaadi Ke Side Effects, she admits work sometimes does not allow her and her husband to spend enough time with each other.

"The amazing thing is that in the six months that we have been married, we have both been travelling a lot. Despite the fact that we live in the same house, we have ended spending lesser time together."

Having said that, the actress admits a certain amount of responsibility comes after marriage.

"I guess both of us are hard working professionals. Around a release or when I am in the middle of shooting, he understands what my pressures are and I understand what his pressures are."

"But, yes, there is a certain responsibility. I am also running a house. I can no longer leave it to my mother to decide what to cook at home," she said.

Come what may, she won't quit acting.

How not to use a condom

Posted: 07 Jun 2013 11:21 AM PDT

Condoms are without a doubt one of the greatest inventions of mankind. Not only are they the most cost-effective way to prevent unwanted pregnancies but also they also stop the transmission of various STDs including the dreaded HIV/AIDS. When used properly, condoms have a 98% success rate! However there are times they can fail. Some of the reasons include improper usage, badly manufactured ones or using expired condoms. We look at some of the ways these miracle devices can fail.
Reason#1: Improper use
While the perfect-use failure rate is only 2%, the typical-use failure rate is 15%. This is mostly because of the mistakes that people usually make when using them. These include:
  • Tearing the packet wrong: Some people tend to rip off the condom packet using their teeth. This can cause tears or breakages in the condom which will lead to a not-so-happy ending.
  • Completely unrolling it: Another common mistake is completely unrolling the condom before putting it on which makes them loose and ineffective.
  • Putting it on wrong: Sometimes people accidentally roll the condom on the wrong way and after realising their mistake then roll it back the right way and use it. This is dangerous because some of the pre-ejaculate material might accidentally get on the outer surface of the condom which can cause pregnancies.
  • Using the wrong lubricant: An important thing you need to keep in mind is you need to use compatible lubricants with condoms. For example if you're using latex ones you should stay away from oil-based lubricants like petroleum jelly, hand lotion or cold cream can damage latex condoms. You should use water-based ones like glycerine or lubricating jellies which can be purchased at most chemist shops.
  • Not squeezing out the air: Before putting on a condom you need to squeeze out the little air bubble in it. Failure to do so can result in the condom breaking.
  • Not leaving space: This issue occurs when guys put it on without leaving some space at the tip for semen which results in breakages.
  • Taking it off before they're done: Some users tend to take it off before they're done which renders the contraception useless.
  • Taking it off too late: Others tend to leave the condom on even after they lose an erection which can result in the sperm seeping out. It's vital to immediately remove and dispose of the condom after use.
Reason#2: Manufacturing and Storage Issues
While the aforementioned reasons are caused by human errors during sex, sometimes condoms can defective as well:
  • Manufacturing Issues: Like other things condoms are man-made and can sometimes have defects when they manufacture. This is why it's important to buy condoms from well-known brands only. Also it's important to make sure you check the packet and see that there are no rips and also that your condom isn't …
  • Past its expiry date: Yes condoms too have an expiry date. It's important to check the packet before you start using them because they tend to lose their elasticity.
  • Storage issues: Most guys store condoms in their pockets which can damage its texture and degrade the latex as can storing them in direct sunlight.
These days most major condom manufacturing companies have stringent measures and tests to check their efficacy. However, if it does break you should immediately contact a doctor about emergency contraceptive pills or buy them over-the-counter. Nowadays, there are pills available that can prevent unwanted pregnancies for up to 72 hours. Remember, the condom is a very powerful tool which lets us control our lives to an extent that simply wasn't possible for our forefathers. Use it wisely.
Watch this video to find out more about condoms and how to put them on properly.

Bangladesh miracle survivor leaves hospital for job in hotel

Posted: 06 Jun 2013 12:02 PM PDT

SAVAR, Bangladesh: A seamstress trapped in the rubble for 17 days after Bangladesh's garment factory disaster in April emerged from hospital today, saying she felt "great" and was looking forward to a new job at a luxury hotel. Reshma, 18, who became a national heroine after the catastrophe that claimed more than 1,100 lives, was in good spirits and looked healthy at a ceremony at the military facility where she was admitted on May 10. "I feel great now. I am recovered mentally and physically," she said, smiling. But after nearly a month of treatment, initially in intensive care, she admitted she was still troubled by nightmares about her ordeal beneath the wreckage of the collapsed Rana Plaza building. "I still get frightened in the night," she told reporters, dressed in a peacock green dress and headscarf.

"Whenever I think of those days I feel bad and frightened. I have forgotten most of what I did under the rubble." The teenager, who uses only one name, drank rainwater and foraged food from co-workers' lunch boxes to survive after her nine-storey workplace collapsed on April 24. Two days after her rescue, she said she would never return to Bangladesh's accident-prone garment sector, the world's second biggest, worth 20 billion dollars a year. Reshma, from a remote village in the western border district of Dinajpur, had begun work in the building just 22 days before it fell down. She was being paid a monthly salary of 4,700 taka (60 dollars). She has since been offered jobs in various hotels and charities, but decided to take up an opportunity at the luxury Westin Hotel in the capital Dhaka.

"I never thought that I would get my life back again when I was trapped under the rubble," she told the packed press conference in Savar, the Dhaka suburb where the disaster took place. Azim Shah, general manager of the Hotel Westin, told reporters he was proud Reshma was joining his team. "We're sure this young girl will be exceptional in her new job," he said, adding she was made a "ambassador in the house-cleaning department". The hotel officials took her to the new job after she was released by the military at around 11am Bangladesh time (0500 GMT), army spokesman Major Touhid-uz-Zaman, said. "Her family accompanied her to the hotel," he said.

At the time of the collapse more than 3,000 garment workers were on shift at the complex housing five factories, where they made clothing for Western retailers including Italy's Benetton and Britain's Primark. They were ordered back to their production lines even as cracks developed on the outside of the complex. The industry has since promised to clean up its act. Most major European buyers have signed up to a new accord promising better working conditions, as well as fire and building inspections.

The legendary B-town actor says it seems he got married only yesterday

Amitabh Bachchan said he was alone on his 40th wedding anniversary, as wifey Jaya Bachchan is away in New York, and son Abhishek Bachchan and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are in London.

Sr Bachchan tweeted last night, "It is past the hour of 12 midnight and time to acknowledge 40 years of our marriage .. June 3, 1973 .."

He wrote on his blog on Tumblr: "40 years !! 40 years of marriage on the 3rd of June 2013 .. ! Jaya and I in marriage for 40 years ..! A lifetime almost ! Seems like just the other evening I had driven with my parents to a friends place on Malabar Hill, in the Southern region of the city, and to a very quick, no fuss, no 'taam jhaam', family and a few friends, and a few close media, wedding. A wedding that had the fulfilment of a promise, that if 'Zanjeer' succeeded we would get married ! Here we are now, two children and three grand children, son in law, daughter in law, relatives and 'samdhi's' in our family fold. God has been very kind!"

He added, "The family is away .. in New York and in London on matters that deserve presence and attention greater than a celebration, so I stay with the memories alone .. not in the real sense, for communication is so instant rapid and finite that, distances have been reduced to a mere mention of a destination."

He drifted, "The awe and the unapproachable mention of these far off places has disappeared .. they are reachable unlike old times, if not physically but almost so virtually .. generation after generation shall enjoy perhaps the benefits of this, and who knows the time factor too shall be greatly reduced. The Concorde flying one to NYC from London in three hours was unthinkable. Today they are already talking of reducing that distance to 45 mins, by entering space and reentering it .. who knows what the future shall hold."

The legendary actor thanked everyone on Facebook, saying, "It is the generosity of fans well wishers and friends that greet us today for the 40 years of togetherness .. so much has gone by, so much has been seen and so much affection given by all concerned .. seems just like yesterday that I drove over to a friends place for a simple quick wedding .. and then we were off to London .. my very first trip to a foreign country, excepting Nepal in 1956 .. the thrill and the joy of not just the visit, but also the feeling of now a married man .. unique !! The marvels of the mind .. "

The actor also shared some pictures sent to him by his extended family – EF, as he likes to call them, comprising his fans around the world.

Hope Jaya, Abhi, Ash, baby Aaradhya Bachchan and daughter Shweta Nanda and family join Big B soon!

There's no competition with Sunny: Bobby Deol

Posted: 03 Jun 2013 11:59 AM PDT

Bobby Deol gets talking about big brother Sunny, his laid back attitude and more in an interview

In between back to back interviews during his recent trip to Ahmedabad to promote Yamla Pagla Deewana 2, Bobby Deol takes a breather before settling down for a chat.Excerpts:

This is the first time you are promoting your film so aggressively.
While the need of the day is to go on an aggressive promotional blitzkrieg, a film will work only if it is made well.

How much do promotional campaigns actually help a film?
As an actor I go with the flow. If other members of the Hindi film fraternity are doing aggressive promotional campaigns, then I can do the same. Plus, such promotional trips enable us to meet our fans.

You are going to be seen on screen after a whole year.
I'm very chilled out and like to take things at my own pace. I am not cut out to do too many films at a time. Right from the start of my career I've been that way. There are people who are in the news all the time even when they are not doing films, I don't believe in that. I am satisfied with what I'm doing right now.

This is the third time you will share screen space with your father Dharmendra and brother Sunny. So how is it working with the family members?
It's more comfortable. When you are working for your home production, you are more involved in the process of film making, and you tend to work really hard. You give your best even when you work with others, but at that time you are involved only as an actor, but if it's your own film there is a certain emotional connect too.

Aren't you wary that Dharmendra and Sunny might overshadow you in the film?
Why will I feel that I'm not getting enough mileage if Dharmendra and Sunny are around? I am an actor at the end of the day and I play a character in the film. So there isn't any sort of competition. In fact, I like the comfort level that we share.

You seem to admire your brother a lot.
Sunny has always been ahead of his times. He thought of making a sequel to Ghayal just after it was released. But no producer agreed at that time, as no one was familiar with that format. And now that sequels are being made in India, people say we copy the west. The truth is even Hollywood copies our stories and style of filmmaking. No one talks about that!

10 Exercise Tips for a Better Sex Life

Posted: 03 Jun 2013 11:59 AM PDT

If you're a woman, you may already be familiar with Kegels -- but they're not just for women. Named for a gynecologist, these exercises are used to strengthen the pubococcygeus (or "PC") muscle. The PC muscle functions as a sort of hammock, supporting the pelvic organs including the bladder, reproductive organs and rectum. Often Kegels are prescribed to treat conditions such as incontinence or prostate pain. They can also make vaginal childbirth easier.

Since the PC is also the muscle that contracts during orgasm, Kegels can improve sexual function in both women and men. Women who strengthen the PC muscle with Kegels report more consistent and better orgasms. In men, Kegels can lead to stronger, longer-lasting erections and have helped treat erectile dysfunction.

One of the best things about Kegels is that they're simple and you can do them anywhere. Finding the right muscle can be tricky, though -- you need to focus just on the PC muscle and not any others around it. Women can insert a finger into the vagina and try to contract and release the muscles around it; you should be able to feel your pelvic floor lift and lower. You can also try stopping and starting your urine flow. Once you've identified the muscle, though, don't perform Kegels when urinating because you can actually weaken it. Start with tightening, holding for five seconds and then releasing. Work up to holding the contraction for longer and doing three sets of at least 10 repetitions a day. Many people get results within just a few months.

How sex can make you more attractive

Posted: 02 Jun 2013 10:49 AM PDT

Ever wondered how to look more attractive without makeup? The secret to being sexy is closer than you think; between the sheets, in fact. Think mussed-up hair, rosy posy cheeks, and perfect pouty lips; we present you with the top seven ways that sex makes you sexy.

1. Have sex for youthful skin
An orgasm – and sometimes even kissing – produces hormones that dramatically increase our natural collagen production, which is important for improving skin's elasticity and making it feel softer. Next time you're about to turn down a good sex session because you're feeling a bit tired or don't have the time, think about the anti-aging benefits and get down to it!
2. Have sex for fewer breakouts
Factors such as stress and what we eat or drink can all contribute to our skin's natural oil production that causes spots. Getting down and dirty not only reduces stress levels to restore the oil imbalance, but also helps us to sweat out the toxins that cause break-outs. Of course, to sweat out the toxins in your body we aren't talking a quickie before work; you need to have a long intense session to work up a real sweat.
3. Have sex for softer skin
Okay, so indulging in some sexy time doesn't exactly make us ponder the scientific implications that such an activity will have upon our skin, but it is a handy bit of info to know. During periods of intense physical activity, our skin produces natural oils like lineolic acid, which lubricates cells and hydrates our skin to keep it soft and hydrated. We can't think of a better excuse to ditch the expensive moisturizer and have some fun instead.
4. Have sex for flushed cheeks and pouty lips
Think of how you look after sex; dewy cheeks, pink lips, big sexy hair and sparkly eyes. Isn't that the healthy look you work hard to create in the morning? Instead of waking up and spending time doing your makeup, why not do the deed instead? Getting busy in the bedroom is a much more exhilarating way of making us look gorgeous.
5. Have sex to burn fat
Even without an orgasm, sex and kissing work wonders when it comes to burning fat. By working up a sweat through doing the deed, you can burn the same amount as you would at the gym, and a bit of good old sexercise also improves your cholesterol levels and mood. Just kissing in itself works up to thirty facial muscles too, so get naked and pucker up!
6. Have sex to look after your locks
Ever wondered how to make your hair healthier and more lustrous? Sex. Each hair follicle on our head has its own blood vessel leading to it, and when we get all hot and sweaty, blood is pumped into these follicles to nourish our hair. Plus, the excitement of ripping each other's clothes off and sliding around in the sheets gives our hair some "oomph" – we love voluminous hair.
7. Have sex to get more beauty sleep
It turns out that Sleeping Beauty may not be as innocent as we all thought. Sex makes us sleepy (Don't fall asleep until after you've finished doing the deed though, of course). The hormones we release during and after sex – oxytocin and prolactin – promote deep relaxation and drowsiness, which help us drift off into a deep and peaceful sleep. During our sleeping hours, our body has time to repair damaged cells and freshen up our skin. Now we know why Sleeping Beauty was so beautiful.

7 health benefits of sex

Posted: 02 Jun 2013 10:49 AM PDT

It turns out that an apple a day isn't the only thing to keep the doctor away; sex has a long and extensive repertoire of health benefits also. While we have nothing against apples, we know a lot of people who would prefer to get their health kick from some intimate time between the sheets, and oh boy, does this provide a health kick! Here are the seven health benefits of sex.

1. Sex eases pain
"Not tonight darling, I've got a headache." That old chestnut is a common excuse to get out of sex when people simply can't be bothered, but it's time to put this age-old excuse to bed once and for all. Have you ever noticed that if you've been feeling a few aches and pains before sex, they are usually non-existent afterwards? This is down to the increased endorphins that soar through your body during sex. Indeed, as you approach and then achieve "the big O," oxytocin surges through your body and relieves pain. Mother Nature, you're very clever!
2. Sex burns fat
Sex is good for your waistline? Perfect! Indeed, while it's obvious that most physical activity helps you to shed the muffin top, you may not be aware of exactly how much fat sex can burn. Vigorous sex burns approximately 150 calories every 30 minutes – that's 300 calories for an hour-long session! The key word here though, ladies and gents, is "vigorous." Lying on your back while your partner does all of the work is not going to burn fat so make sure you're giving it your all. If anyone can think of a better excuse to have sex, please let us know.
3. Sex increases lifespan
Several studies have suggested that getting down and dirty could extend our lifespan by a considerable amount – up to eight years! A 25-year study carried out by Duke University in the United States found that the more sexual activity we're involved in, the longer we live. Indeed, of the 270 people who took part in the 25-year study, everyone who had a healthy, regular sex life lived up to eight years longer than those who had little interest in it. The motto of this story? Never give up on sex, no matter how old you are.

4. Sex strengthens pelvic floor muscles

Gents, we know what you're thinking: "Pelvic floor exercises are for women." Think again. While Kegel exercises are often recommended to women for their ability to treat incontinence and re-strengthen the muscles around 'that' area after childbirth, they're beneficial for both genders. Indeed, the benefits of Kegel exercises in men include helping with impotence and reducing the risk of prostate cancer. And how do you go about doing Kegel exercises if you're a man? Sex is just one of the many ways – both men and women are performing Kegel exercises during sex, without even realizing it.
5. Sex lowers your stress levels
Scientists in Scotland carried out a study to see how well 24 women and 22 men coped under pressure. The study found that those with a healthy sex life who had recently had sex were less stressed when asked to deliver a public speech than those who hadn't had sex. A separate study carried out by scientists in an Arizona state university found that of the 58 middle-aged women who took part in the survey, those who had recent and regular sex had significantly lower levels of stress and a significantly higher mood the next day.
6. Sex strengthens the immune system
Scientists at Wilkes University, Wilkes-Barre, carried out a study on 112 college students who recorded their sexual behavior and provided saliva samples. The study revealed that those who had sex once or twice a week had higher levels of immunoglobulin than those who had sex less frequently. Immunoglobulin is an antibody that boosts your immune system and more of it is present during sexy time. More of the immunoglobulin hormone means less risk of developing colds or other infections.
7. Sex helps you to look younger
Sex doesn't just make you feel younger – research suggests it can make you look younger also. When we reach orgasm, our bodies secrete DHEA, a clever little hormone. Indeed, the benefits of DHEA on our health are too many to list here, but in general, it boosts the immune system, improves cognitive function, improves cardiovascular health and keeps our skin looking fresh and young. The more often you have sex, the younger you'll look. We'd much rather have sex than fork out lots of money on expensive anti-ageing creams. Read more at

Ghanchakkar song Lazy lad: Fashionista Vidya Balan takes Emraan Hashmi’s case!

Posted: 02 Jun 2013 10:50 AM PDT

This Hindi-Punjabi number is quite funny as it takes us through the couple's daily routine

Composed by Amit Trivedi, Lazy lad from Ghanchakkar is a quirky song where Vidya Balan takes her husband Emraan Hashmi's case, calling him lazy and good for nothing. The song is set in the couple's gaudy house – with the walls painted in bright pinks and florescent greens – and the camera following each of them as they go about their daily chores.

Ms Balan's character in this Raj Kumar Gupta movie believes she's a fashionista, but in reality she is just a big horror! And the track brings this side of VB to the fore. We love how towards the end of it, Vidya dreams of walking the ramp in horrible clothes, blowing kisses and posing for the cameras. She fits the quirky Punjabi kudi role perfectly.

Watch the song and tell us if it made you smile.
