Osama's death bad, India biggest threat, say Pakistanis

Posted: 22 Jun 2011 01:32 AM PDT

WASHINGTON: Most Pakistanis see India as a bigger threat than the Taliban and the al-Qaida and disapprove of the US military operation that killed Osama bin Laden, according to a new poll. Although al-Qaida leader bin Laden has not been well-liked in recent years, a majority of Pakistanis describe his death as a bad thing. Only 14 percent say it is a good thing, according to a poll released on Tuesday by the Pew Research Centre. Moreover, many Pakistanis believe the US raid on bin Laden's hideout, which was located about 35 miles from Islamabad, will have a negative impact on the already strained relations between the US and their country. The poll also indicates that concerns among Pakistanis about an extremist takeover and support for using military force against extremist groups are slipping, but the groups themselves remain widely unpopular. Just 12 percent of Pakistanis have a positive view of al-Qaida, down from 18 percent in 2010. Only 12 percent give the Taliban a favourable rating with both Pakistan based Tehrik-i-Taliban and the Afghan Taliban getting similarly low levels of support. There is somewhat more support for Pakistan based Lashkar-e- Taiba group held responsible for the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Currently, 27 percent have a positive opinion of the terror outfit. Results of two surveys conducted in Pakistan by Pew's Global Attitudes Project also show that Pakistani views of traditional rival India have grown increasingly negative in recent years with three-in-four expressing an unfavourable opinion of India, up from 50 percent five years ago. When asked which is the biggest threat to their country, India, the Taliban, or al-Qaida, a majority of Pakistanis (57 percent) say India, the poll noted. Still, roughly seven-in-ten say it is important to improve relations with India, believe increased trade with their neighbour would be a good thing, and support further talks to reduce tensions between the two countries, the Pew poll said. Similarly, Indians express negative opinions of Pakistan; 65 percent have an unfavourable view of their traditional rival and more name Pakistan as India's biggest threat (45 percent) than name Lashkar-e-Taiba (19 percent) or Naxalites (16 percent). Yet, like Pakistanis, Indians would like to see improved relations between the two countries and most support increased trade between India and Pakistan.

I want justice: Rumana

Mohammad . . : on one hand never get sounds, sabiha sultana . . : / Zakir Bipul . . : Sayeed should be punished..no doubt. But it is really tough to believe human being, now-a- days. We like to believe Rumana...but....it is tough to believe that without any reason Sayeed became too cruel! Md. Aminul Haq Shohag . . : Mohammad . . : but i am really sorry for this and also five years old child. however, who will believe that without any complex reasons, who want to kill their wife. . . : ; Sonia Sharmin Islam . . : , ? ' ' ?? , ..... ... ... !! Telapoka . . : ''one hand can't make sound''??! what is this?many people, even some of my friends harbor this type of mentality. From my point of view, i know how much tolerant the Bangali women are. Whenever I am angry and behaved rough with my wife, she has tolerated it and when I become calm, I say sorry to her. But I know if I were in her place I couldn't have tolerated that much as she does. Mrs Rumana tolerated the man for years and she was still tolerating. It was Sayed who actually gave an end to this relationship by being violent. Otherwise we might never know about Mrs. Rumana. She would have tolerated him forever. . . : Something really happened between them. I get speechless whenever i read such news. Sikandar Ali . . : Mohammad/Md. Aminul Haq Shohag/Zakir Bipul/ , - !!!!!! AFM Mahfuzur Rahman . . : zinia . . : he must punish for his act. No mercy.. . : No comments, but I am very sad why did it happened. I believe both of them were good person. But may be things were not going in order. I hope Rumana will get back her vision. BOSS . . : - - shoaib. . : No doubt….I expect exemplary punishment for his cruelty and inhumanity but I can' t avoid the authentic reasons of it. I hope to journalist please reveal the real causes behind it and don' t publish one sided news. Chintito . . : , , ---- . . : I'm very sorry to see the news, that rumana has lost has eyesight. Whatever may be the reason saeed must be get punished. Imtiaz Wadud . . : No one has right to destroy the eyes of another human being which is creation of mighty Allah. This is the main fact here. Whatever there other hidden reason behind this incident Sayeed should punished for this reason. RF . . : I completely agree with you Mohammad. Mohammad Rahman . . : , , , Mohammad Nurul Islam . . : just rumana is a teacher of du. so that so much news is come to the people. . . : Sabiha, talk to a point. make comment only on the issue. the way u blame all husband and religion, this is totally unacceptable. I think every single person got sock for the incident home and abroad. but some people like you try to blame all men, again some stupid men try to blame all women in general. so be wise and make comment. Parvez . . : may be there some reasons... but, how a man(not a man) can torture on his wife like animal.. the only punishment is "EYE FOR EYE".. Trino . . : priobhasini . . : Md. Shamim Hossain . . : Cosidering both side and thinking about their daughter, I will say, they should give another oppertunity to start their lives. And I am sure that this will not happen again. TAPAN AHMED . . : Paul Romit Deuri . . : @Mr. Mohammad, Mr. Zakir--Mr Sayed(culprit) in not the only one in our country. He has many a friends((culprit)) like you.Shame hasan morshed . . : even though sayeed was so much wrong but it should find real cause between sayeed and rumana.mohammed ibrahim . . : !!!!!! . . : Hope that court will judge the matter fairly and precision will come to the light. Tamal . . : , , .. .. . . : Though Syed so much blamed but his wife.....? Kanak Chakraborty . . : Ashraf Pervez . . : We want to see fair judgment. TAPAS KUMAR DAS . . : I am really upset about five year's child. Md. Rashedul Alam . . : . . : - , Tumul . . : thanks my all frnd. No body can not support this type of animal behavior. Saif Taifur Anwar . . : ? ?!! , ! . . : This is so called Bangladeshi educated people. Saif I Khan . . : , Saif I Khan . . : , Md. Lokman Uddin . . : @ Md. Aminul Haq Shohag, , , , ? , Md. Al-Mamun . . : Asad . . : ? - Mamun Khan . . : , , Chintito . . : , , !! zakir . . : Rumana should have divorced him long time ago after discovering that he is not a nice person. She made a mistake! Divorce was better than this! Rasel Hamid . . : It really does not matter that you can clap in one hand or not. It is just a reflection of social degradation in Bangladesh. When in a country, money is the only way to judge people and sex is the prime entertainment, similar things are happening and will happen. Some stories come in media and we jump on that. Thousands of male and female suffers, not to this extent though, cries silently. . . : Rumana's judgement of selecting this man is terrible. But this does not mean that barbarism should be inflicted on her. No human being deserves what Rumana is going through. REZAUL HOQUE . . : Frustration, Ego, Jealous..................... OK.....................but this way..........no never.................Coward Shafiqul Islam . . : this is very painful. in conjugal life, very bad situation is created sometimes from very small cause. i think that there was a misunderstanding between them. the cause was perhaps higher education of rumana. but no doubt that sayeed has committed crime and must be punished. we all couple need to take lesson from this very painful event. MD. MONERUJJAMAN . . : I think it' s a personal opinion side (comment) side. So please don' t use another commentator name his personal comment, only input own opinion. Moshiur Rahman Jewel . . : It is really bad incident & totally unacceptable. But it is really thought to believe human being. I believe in our country so many Sayeed is suffering from there wife, but they are not sharing these issue to others & if it is shared to family like parents or some of friends, also they can' t give any good solution, cause it is very sensitive issue!!! Actually such kinds of issue like his wife have habituate to adultery. I believe Rumana also created some bad incident which is makes day by day big issues. We all of us need to alert & be aware from such kind of bad incident. Thank you in advanced all of you for your consciousness!!!!! Mahbubur . . : Those who are searching for reason what happened, don't you see there is nothing has to do with what he did to his wife. What reason could be justified to chew wife's body and make someone blind? You guys are pathetic! Justice will be served if he get punished for what her husband did to her. Proof that he is the one did it, that's all should be matter, not why he did it. There is no why, no reasoning, he is heinous criminal. . . : How can a human does such an inhumane thing? There is a violent, pervert thing inside sayed and so in those people who support sayed. How can people even ask question about rumana when she became blind. She won't be able to see her daughter grow. Her world is black now. When I think about that and place myself in her place then I think death is better than blindness. I feel so sorry when people support sayed. Where are our society heading? Please think about your mother, sister and your precious daughter. What you will do if it happens to them? Saiful Alam . . : ..... Mohd. Dulal . . : , , - adom . . : ? ? ? md arif miah . . : stupid aminul , never write any comment. i think you &hasan sayed same

The RussAir Tu-134 tried to land just before midnight local time on Monday on a motorway two km from Petrozavodsk airport in the Karelia region of northern Russia. But the plane, which was carrying out a flight from Moscow's Domodedovo airport, crashed and caught fire before it approached the airport. "On July 20, a Tu-134 plane sustained a hard landing. "According to the latest information, 52 people were on board the plane. Forty four were killed and eight were injured," an emergencies ministry official told the RIA Novosti news agency. The emergencies ministry in Moscow published a list of the passengers on the flight while the local branch of the ministry in Karelia gave a list of the eight people who had surivived. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear, although the 24-hour news channel Vesti quoted aviation sources as saying that bad weather in the area at the time could have been a factor. Bangalore cops tell Google to pull out Street View cars

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 11:43 AM PDT

NEW DELHI: Just three weeks after Google's Street View cars started driving around Bangalore, the company has grounded the fleet after an objection from the city police. According to Google, it received a letter from the Commissioner of Police of Bangalore asking it to stop the cars. The cars were taking pictures and mapping streets of Bangalore. The data was supposed to be used for Google's Street View service. "We can confirm that we have received a letter from the commissioner of police regarding Street View. We are currently reviewing it and have stopped our cars until we have a chance to answer any questions or concerns the police have," said a Google spokesperson. According to Google, it received the letter last week. Sources said the commissioner has asked the search engine giant to stop photographing streets of Bangalore. The commissioner has also called Google officials for further discussions on the matter. Before Street View cars started operating, Google claims it took permission from the traffic department of Bangalore police According to MediaNama, the police have reservations regarding legality of Google' s Street View in India. An anonymous source reportedly told the website that the police acted because there were several restrictions on photography by foreigners or foreign firms in India. The police also reportedly consider Street View and the data presented through it as a form of new media, putting it under the ambit of foreign direct investment policy that governs investment and participation by foreign companies in Indian media. Even though Google Street View has proven immensely popular with users, the service has faced resistance in several parts of the world. The data in Street View is not shown to users in real-time but there have been privacy concerns over its use. In Austria and Czech Republic the service was banned temporarily. Recently, in April Google closed down Street View in Germany after privacy issues raised by the government and told European Union that it may withdraw the service from the member countries due to new laws on storing photographs.

Americans are tired of war: Gates

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 07:32 PM PDT

WASHINGTON: US defence secretary Robert Gates on Sunday acknowledged that Americans are tired of war as he underlined that Washington did not have the right strategy and resources in Afghanistan till last year. "I know the American people are tired of war. But, look, the reality is the United States had a very limited commitment in Afghanistan until well into 2008," said Gates, who retires at the end of this month. "We did not have the right strategy and the right resources for this conflict and a lot of resources, those needed to do the job, until the late summer of 2010," Gates told CNN in an interview. He said President Barack Obama made this decision for the second surge in December of 2009. "It took us some months to get the additional surge in," he said. "So I understand everybody is war weary, but the reality is we won the first Afghan war in 2001 and 2002. We were diverted by Iraq, and we basically neglected Afghanistan for several years," he said in response to a question. He said at the end of December 2006 when took over the top post at the Pentagon, 194 Americans had been killed in five years of warfare. "That is the level of conflict that we were engaged in. So I understand we have been at war for 10 years, but we have not been at war full scale in Afghanistan, except since last summer," Gates underlined. He said the objective in both of these wars (Iraq and Afghanistan) has been to end them on terms that enhance the United States' security, uphold America's prestige and reputation, and advance US interests. "If we can accomplish that, then bringing them to a close as quickly as possible, I think, is the right thing to do," he said.

Defiant Gaddafi vows to defeat Nato

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 10:22 AM PDT

Hours after loud blasts shook Libya's capital Tripoli, Muammar Gaddafi vowed to defeat Nato as his forces launched a deadly rocket assault on rebel-held Misrata. "Nato is bound to be defeated," Gaddafi said in the speech broadcast on loudspeakers in Tripoli's Green Square as thousands of flag-waving regime supporters staged their biggest rally in weeks. "We are determined to change nothing in our country other than by our own free will... We are resisting, we are fighting," he declared. Meanwhile, the Libyan government dismissed rebel denials that the two sides have been holding talks. Addressing a news conference in Tripoli just hours after loud explosions again rocked the Libyan capital, Prime Minister Baghdadi al-Mahmudi accused Nato of committing "war crimes and crimes against humanity" by "directly targeting civilian sites" with air raids over the past three days. "Ask the Egyptians, French, Norwegians and Tunisians for information. They will tell you the truth," Baghdadi said. "We are sure of our meetings and everything has been recorded." Speaking earlier on Friday a day after visiting Tripoli, Margelov said that the Libyan government had forged multiple contacts with the Libyan opposition in foreign capitals including Berlin, Paris and Oslo. The claim has been repeatedly denied by the rebels National Transitional Council. At least five further explosions were heard early yesterday in and around the capital, an AFP journalist reported. In the western rebel enclave of Misrata, 10 people were killed and 40 wounded when Gaddafi loyalists fired a volley of Grad rockets at the lifeline port city, rebel spokesman Ahmed Hassan told AFP.

Australian PM slides in polls

Australian leader Julia Gillard said she felt "very secure" and vowed to stay the course yesterday, after an unprecedented slump in the polls and a surge in support for axed prime minister Kevin Rudd. The latest Nielsen poll, published in Fairfax newspapers yesterday, put support for Gillard's ruling Labor party at 27 percent, the lowest primary vote for a major party in the poll's 39-year history. Tony Abbott's conservative Liberal party enjoyed 49 percent, according to the survey of 1,400 Australians, rising to 59 percent with smaller party preferences against Gillard's 41 percent

Obama, Boehner team up in golf match

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 08:51 AM PDT

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama and Republican House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner teamed up in a golf match on Saturday to try to build a friendlier climate for troubled talks on the debt and deficits. In a game won on the 18th hole, Obama, a Democrat, and Boehner beat Vice President Joe Biden and Ohio Republican Governor John Kasich on a course at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, just outside Washington. The four hit the links as Democrats and Republicans were at odds over ways to cut the U.S. budget by trillions and to raise the $14.3 trillion ceiling on the nation's debt. Since May, Biden has been leading talks with a group of lawmakers. Without a deal to allow the nation to issue more debt, the Treasury Department has warned the government will begin defaulting on obligations on August 2. Kasich, a former congressman, is an expert on federal financial matters and a friend of the speaker.

Sameera Reddy suffers an accident while shooting for ‘Tezz

Posted: 18 Jun 2011 09:48 PM PDT

Our space had informed you a few days back that dusky beauty Sameera Reddy is having a stint with bikes for her forthcoming action thriller ' Tezz' . It so happened that when the actress was filming a stunt in the Perthshire forests, her bike skidded on a sharp turn and fell over. The bike was running at 60 kmph and Sam was dragged for at least 10 to 15 seconds before the bike could finally stop. Her right hand and shoulder suffered injuries. Recalls Sameera, "There was a big truck with the crew catching the action from the front and the cinematographer on a bike with an ADV (digital incamera) riding alongside. A couple of cars were also following at top speed. I could have rammed into the truck, swerved and hit the cameraman or the guys from behind could have run me over. But God was watching out for me." "The action director who has choreographed stunts for Pierce Brosnan' s Bond adventures says my fast reflexes saved me. I' d trained for this for three months last year and not fallen once. This chase sequence was one of the last to be canned and no one had expected anything amiss. The near-fatal accident proves that when it' s action, you' re never too prepared for the worst," she added. Since she has completed most of her action sequences and has only a glamorous song left to shoot, director Priyadarshan has refused to let Sameera get onto her bike any more.

Mumbai takes note of sexting, the seamier side of texting

Posted: 18 Jun 2011 09:43 PM PDT

MUMBAI: When Chitra started getting SMSs and emails laced with sexual innuendoes from an unknown individual, she didn' t tell her mother or rush to the police. The 21-year-old grew so despondent that she dialed a psychologist for help. But last week, a 17-year-old student of L S Patkar College in Goregaon didn' t react like Chitra (name changed) did when she got lewd SMSs from her teacher. The teenager approached the police and got her computer hardware teacher, Rahul Sarangle, arrested. Sarangle was subsequently released on bail, but not before Mumbai had sat up and taken note of the seamier side of texting or sexting as it is known. Sexting is, in simple terms, text messages with a sexual overtone. It' s not new; in fact, every state in the US has worked out guidelines and laws to keep a check on unsolicited sexting, especially when children are the recipients. The American Academy of Pediatrics has coined a definition: "Sending, receiving, or forwarding sexually explicit messages, photographs, or images via cell phone, computer, or other digital devices." Sexting has been at the forefront of news and online search engines due to the 20- day drama of US Congressman Anthony Weiner, who resigned on Friday after it emerged that he had sent explicit pictures of himself to six women using various online tools. The moot question is why do men such as lecturer Rahul Sarangle or politicians like Anthony Weiner sext when it can be easily traced back to them? Experts said unsolicited sexting is about sex and perversion. Psychiatrist Dr Harish Shetty said, "Such sexting occurs when the mind is obsessed; sexual thoughts are supreme and reasoning fails." He believes that a person who sexts also feels a sense of power. "The person' s fingers work faster than the vocal cords. In such individuals, rational thought that should stop such urges seems paralysed," said Dr Shetty. Said psychologst Hingoranney, "Some people are obsessed with sex or have supressed sexuality problem. They would derive sadistic thrills by sexting." India is not without its share of sexting tales; the most infamous being the widely circulated MMS of two Delhi high school students in 2004. Said Nishant Shah, director (research) of the Bangalore-based Centre for Internet & Society, "Sexting is essentially about mobile phones. While there is no study in India on sexting, it' s obvious from our sessions with youngsters that sexting is a part of the new communication patterns emerging among young people." At times, sexting can have disastrous outcomes. While Chitra is a nervous wreck who feels she may have invited the sexts with her behaviour, American teen Jessica Logan committed suicide in 2008 after her ex-boyfriend circulated nude pictures that she had earlier in their relationship MMSed him. Shah said, "During our research in Bihar, we came across youngsters in Bihar who have suffered a great deal when an older family member read SMSs that they had sent." Any SMS to a male friend could be misconstrued as sexting in non- metro parts of India, he added. All experts said that measures should be taken by families, schools\colleges and society at large to protect youngsters from the ills of sexting. ``Victims could feel shocked, violated and frightened,'' said Dr Shetty. "The words jump from the screen bringing a deep sense of disgust and a feeling of pain. The experience may be converted to bad memories if counseling is not done.''

Nine killed, 12 injured in Kabul police station attack

Posted: 18 Jun 2011 09:39 AM PDT

KABUL: Nine people were killed and 12 wounded in a Taliban attack on a Kabul police station on Saturday, a spokesman for the Afghan interior ministry said, increasing the previous death toll from two. "In this incident, three policemen, one intelligence officer and five civilians were killed and two police along with 10 other civilians were wounded," said spokesman Najib Nikzad.
