How to get rid of facial hair

Posted: 22 Mar 2013 10:20 AM PDT

Beauty expert Shahnaz Husain suggests some hair removal tips

There are many ways of removing facial hair. The method should be chosen according to quantity or thickness, location and rate of growth. Read on to find out more

Temporary methods of facial hair removal

Plucking
This method involves the use of tweezers and removes hair from the follicles. Therefore, re-growth takes time. Plucking is suitable for stray hairs on the chin, between and under the brows. It should not be used for hair on the upper lip. The area should be first wiped with cotton wool, soaked in a mild antiseptic solution. One should also take care not to pluck out hair from a mole, before consulting a doctor.

Threading
It's the most common method of removing facial hair. The disadvantage is that the effect is temporary and the procedure has to be repeated periodically. It is useful for areas like the upper lip and the eyebrows. In fact, threading is done to shape the eyebrows. Frequent
threading can cause skin irritations. On sensitive skins, there can be redness or a rash. Avoid threading on areas with eruptions, like pimples or acne. A zinc ointment or ice can be applied to soothe the skin.

Waxing
Many beauty salons offer "katori" waxing for facial hair. Cold wax would be safer for the face. Waxing strips are available. However, large areas of the face should not be waxed. It would be good for smaller areas like the chin, area above the lips or sideburns. For excessive facial hair, many women use a combination of methods, like threading chin and area above lips and bleaching the rest of the face. Or, threading chin and upper lip and waxing sideburns.

Epilation
An epilator is a small gadget for hair removal. Epilators for facial hair are different from the ones for body hair. The effect lasts for about 4 to 6 weeks. Epilators pull out the hair by the roots. It is said that the smallest hair can be removed with an epilator. There is
some initial pain, which may decrease gradually.

Electrolysis
Although this is said to be a permanent method of hair removal, re-growth can occur. In electrolysis, the diathermy method was common. It involves the use of fine needles, through which an electric current is passed. But now a new procedure is being used, known as transdermal electrolysis, in which needles are not used. Also, superfluous hair
can be removed from larger areas.

In the earlier method, needles were introduced into the hair follicle to cauterise the hair root. This checked re-growth. It is extremely important to make inquiries, as scarring can occur in the hands of an unskilled operator.

Laser
This is the latest method of permanent removal of facial hair. Laser produces an intense beam of light, which is absorbed by the hair follicles. The laser disables the hair follicle's ability to produce hair. Cooling devices are used to prevent damage to the rest of the
skin. The advantage of laser over electrolysis is that the laser light can scan broader areas. Therefore, fewer sessions are required. However, it is more expensive than electrolysis. Re-growth occurs in some cases, but is slower and scantier. It is very important to find a
good laser clinic. The temporary known side effects are redness, swelling and itching. The main risk in laser treatment is the possibility of skin burns. So, before choosing the clinic, it is essential to find out its reputation, by making inquiries and talking to people who have been through the treatment.

Home remedies
For very fine hair, scrubs and exfoliation can help. This would discourage hair growth over a period of time, if used regularly. Make a thick paste of sugar, lemon juice and water and apply it in the direction of hair growth. Wash off when it dries. Apply it once or twice a week. Apply a paste of turmeric powder and milk and rub this on the skin with a circular motion. It is said to discourage facial hair, but it may leave a yellowish tinge on the skin.

Sanjay Dutt's jail sentence: Rs 250 crore is riding on the actor

Sanju had just woken up from a disturbed sleep when the news broke

Over the last 20 years, the spectre of the 1993 serial blasts never once left actor Sanjay Dutt. Forever conscious of the carnage wherever he was — at his Pali Hill residence or behind bars (Arthur Road, then at Yerwada in Pune), he silently cursed himself for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

When the Supreme Court verdict came on the morning of March 21, Sanju was declared guilty for possession of arms. He was given a reduced sentence of five years' imprisonment.

The actor, who received the news at his Imperial Heights residence, was stoic. Sources say he had just woken up from a "disturbed sleep". The verdict apart, he truly believes he is innocent.

Talking to TOI a few days ago, he mentioned the reason why he wanted his older daughter Trishala to study forensic science is because he wanted her to help hapless victims who may find themselves on the wrong side of the law and who may be penalised, even before their guilt is proven.

Money riding on the actor
An estimated amount of 250 crore is riding on actor Sanjay Dutt who has been sentenced to five-years of imprisonment in the final verdict in the 1993 serial bomb blast case. The actor was shooting for Policegiri at Film City in Mumbai until Wednesday.

Shah Rukh did not edit me out: Annu Kapoor

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 07:21 AM PDT

Annu Kapoor, who recently won the National Award for Best Supporting Actor for his quirky portrayal of a Dr Chaddha in 'Vicky Donor', is a happy man today. Finally, his contribution in the film has been acknowledged. And he says,"I am humbled by the award and accept it with lot of graciousness."

The actor, who has hardly found a mention in the award speeches by the filmmakers at various events, says that although it initially bothered him, he has no bitterness for anyone anymore.

Talking about award functions, Kapoor mentions how some time back his acceptance speech was deleted in the final edit when the event was telecast. But, not all experiences were similar.

He says, "When Shah Rukh asked me to say something after I accepted the Filmfare Award, I told him about the incident. He promised not to clip my speech and when it was televised."

SRK kept his word and a grateful Kapoor messaged him in gratitude.

Vicky Donor was a milestone in Kapoor's career with most admitting that it was his role that made the film so popular. Kapoor laughs and says, "Not many times it has happened in Indian cinema that an actor has imitated a character actor at award functions," referring to Shahid Kapoor's Dr Chaddha gig.

When asked him if the star-struck film industry has finally started to take him seriously, he says, "Things are changing. But talent and success still don't go hand in hand here."

This is not Kapoor's first brush with the National Awards, the actor-director-singer won the Best Director - V Shantaram Award for Abhay. He says, "I am totally in mood to direct another film. I will start working on a script soon."

Sanjay Gupta clarifies on the Kangana Ranaut controversy

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 07:17 AM PDT

The publicity of the keenly awaited 'Shootout At Wadala' is at its peak, as the film makes it to the news almost every day for something or the other.
Following the massive launch of Priyanka Chopra's dance track 'Babli Badmaash' and the announcement about the sensational Sunny Leone playing a walk-on part in a song sequence ('Laila') there were reports to suggest that Kangana Ranaut was miffed at being kept out of the film's publicity.
There is news that Kangana was to be a part of the signature 'Aala Re Aala' track but couldn't do it. Sophie Choudry now features opposite John Abraham in the soon-to-release song.
Clarifies Sanjay Gupta, "Kangana is my film's heroine and there is no reason for her to be upset. She has a full-fledged role in the film. When Katrina did Chikni Chameli it didn't mean that Priyanka was upset. Likewise Kareena doing Fevicol was not reason for Sonakshi to be upset. I don't think that we should see more than what meets the eye."
Kangana is currently shooting for another film in Bhopal. 'Shootout At Wadala' releases worldwide on May 1.

One could say Bollywood was shining, courtesy unique films like "Kahaani", "Vicky Donor", "Paan Singh Tomar", "OMG: Oh My God!" and "Dekh Indian Circus", which won multiple awards. Aamir Khan's production house rejects 200 scripts in 12 months

Posted: 18 Mar 2013 08:57 AM PDT

His production house has reportedly rejected 200 scripts in 12 months, including those from Vishal Bhardwaj, Pradeep Sarkar and Priyadarshan. So what's cooking?

At a time when most other production houses are lining up their projects for 2015 (their schedule for 2014 is already full) and busy putting together their "slate" for the year, employees of Aamir Khan's production house are twiddling their thumbs.

Aamir, who takes the final call on all projects, has not green-lighted any project since Talaash, which was announced in 2010. This makes it the only A-list production house with no film on the floors. It is also unlikely that any film will go on the floors this year.

According to reports, Aamir's team has carefully evaluated around 200 scripts in the last 12 months. There are 15 submissions every month, and Aamir has declined to put his money into any one of them.

An insider at Aamir's production house explained that the apparent tardiness is because of the lengthy process that has been put into place for evaluation of scripts. "We receive anything between 10 to 15 scripts a month. Now, we have set up a system to evaluate them. First, the script is subjected to a round of initial scrutiny to see if it should move to round two. If we accept the script, we give the filmmaker a signed letter from Aamir saying that he has accepted the script and that if he finds it good enough, he will get back to the filmmaker," explained the source.

The selected script then goes through a three-stage evaluation process. "There is a screening again and only a couple of them are forwarded to Aamir. He has a few sounding boards (including his wife Kiran). They go through the scripts that have come for review. A maximum of two to three eventually reach him. He reads them in his free time, and there is no saying when he will get back. It could be six months, or more," says the source. Since 2010, no script has been able to make the cut.

So what is Aamir looking for? "An original idea... if he gets the hint that the script borrows even as much as a phrase from somewhere, he will reject it," the source added.

Buzz is, Aamir has already turned down several filmmakers. Besides the Kashmiri Glasshouse project, which he rejected recently, TOI has learnt that he said no to Vishal Bhardwaj, Rohit Shetty, Pradeep Sarkar, Priyadarshan and a host of comparatively new film directors. One also hears that a script similar to Chennai Express (a remake of a south film) landed up at AK Productions, though it could not be confirmed.

A spokesperson for Aamir confirmed that there are no films on his slate right now, saying: "As a production house, we are not in a hurry to produce a film, we will sign a film only when we find a good script. All our films have been path-breaking ones and we would like to continue the same way."

Aamir took five years to produce his second film after Lagaan (2001). But since then, he has been producing at least one film every year. Though technically he didn't have a release in 2009, that was the year when Peepli Live was scheduled to release and it was delayed to 2010. In 2011, he had two films on his slate. But after Taalash released in 2012 after a year's delay, there are no films in the pipeline.

Wouldn’t do a film like The Dirty Picture: Kajol

Posted: 16 Mar 2013 11:29 AM PDT

Kajol, who has been an inspiration for many newcomers in Bollywood and have millions of fans attached to her claims that she would have never done a film like The Dirty Picture.

As the third day of FICCI came to an end, Karan Johar was seen getting candid with the celebrated actress and his close friend Kajol. When the director asked Kajol whether she would have done The Dirty Picture which changed the entire dynamics in the Hindi film industry, Kajol said, "I wouldn't do a film like The Dirty Picture. I have a husband and kids and I won't be able to do justice to such a role. You need a certain mentality and ease to carry such a character."

When the film-maker stressed on knowing whether Kajol was open to do a off-beat yet commercial film like Kahaani, Kajol said that it's her gut which makes her sign flicks. "I go with my gut and instinct and how do I feel with the director. I would have done Kahaani only if Sujoy would have been able to sell it to me and also my gut after meeting him," emphasized Kajol.

While talking about different directors to Karan, Kajol said, "A good project but a poor director will always make a mediocre film, but an average script and good director can make a good film as he will put in everything to make the film look good."

"I don't mind out of the box films, but I seriously feel there is a dearth of good, tight scripts," concluded Kajol.
