Obama admits Israel 'differences'

Posted: 20 May 2011 07:30 PM PDT

US President Barack Obama and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu have admitted to "differences" on the path to Mid-East peace, after they met in Washington.

The talks came after Mr Obama said in a key speech that any future Palestinian state must be based on the borders that existed prior to the 1967 war. A defiant Mr Netanyahu said there may be some concessions but stressed the 1967 lines were "indefensible". He said that there could be no peace "based on illusions". "[It] will crash eventually on the rocks of Middle East reality," Mr Netanyahu said. After the talks, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas urged Mr Obama to continue pressing Mr Netanyahu on the 1967 borders plan, AFP news agency reported. 'I want peace' Mr Obama said there were differences between the US and Israel on a future state for Palestinians, but that such disputes occurred "between friends". He did not bring up the matter of the borders in his joint conference with Mr Netanyahu. Mr Obama said Palestinians faced "tough choices" following the recent reconciliation deal between Fatah, which runs the West Bank, and Hamas, which governs Gaza and still denies Israel's right to exist. He said true peace could only occur if Israel was allowed to defend itself against threats. Mr Obama said the pair had also discussed the revolts in a number of Arab countries, and their impact on the security of the US and Israel. He said the situation meant there were both "opportunities" and "perils". Mr Netanyahu also admitted that "we may have differences here and there" on the peace process. He said: "While Israel is prepared to make generous compromises for peace, it cannot go back to the 1967 lines because these lines are indefensible. "They do not take into account certain demographic changes on the ground that have taken place over the last 44 years." But Mr Netanyahu insisted he valued Mr Obama's efforts, saying: "Israel wants peace, I want peace." The BBC's Paul Adams in Washington says the two leaders had tried hard not to show what a difficult encounter this had been. 'Passionate' The reference to the 1967 borders in Mr Obama's speech on Thursday had angered the Israeli government. Mr Netanyahu believes the formula would isolate Israeli settlements in the West Bank. US officials told Associated Press news agency a "passionate" Mr Netanyahu had tried to have the section removed from Mr Obama's speech and was incensed when he failed. One Israeli official travelling to Washington on the plane with Mr Netanyahu said: "There is a feeling that Washington does not understand the reality, doesn't understand what we face." But Mr Netanyahu has come under increasing pressure as world figures and organisations lined up to back Mr Obama's position. The Middle East Peace Quartet - which combines the European Union, United Nations and Russia with the US - expressed "strong support" for Mr Obama's plan. Key European Union leaders also backed Mr Obama's speech. UK Foreign Secretary William Hague praised President Obama's "clear message that the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps". German Chancellor Angela Merkel called it "a good, viable path that both sides should consider". Arab League chief, Amr Moussa, also called on President Obama to remain committed to the 1967 borders plan. Mr Netanyahu was much more comfortable with the unconditional love for Israel offered by President George W Bush. He told Israel in 2004 that it would not have to pull back to the 1967 lines. President Obama prefers tough love. As he put it, "precisely because of our friendship, it is important that we tell the truth: the status quo is unsustainable, and Israel too must act boldly to advance a lasting peace". Mr Netanyahu is an Israeli nationalist who believes that the land Palestinians want for a state is really the Jewish homeland. In the 1990s he fell out with President Bill Clinton. President Obama was furious when Mr Netanyahu earlier ridiculed his call for Israel to stop building homes for Jews on occupied land. Mr Netanyahu was punished with a White House meeting too late to get on the Israeli evening news. They didn't even release a photo of the two men together. But with so much happening in the Middle East, they have reasons to try to get on. It might not be easy. Mamata takes oath as first female CM of W Bengal

Posted: 20 May 2011 07:24 PM PDT

Kolkata: The wheel of political fortune turned full circle on Friday as Mamata Banerjee finally took oath as the eleventh Chief Minister of West Bengal and gained control of Writers' Buildings, the red-painted edifice of power in the heritage hug of Kolkata from where she was thrown out once by the communists who captured it for over 34 years. The erstwhile rulers of West Bengal - former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee graced the swearing-in- watched the historic moments of West Bengal' s first female Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reading out the oath in chaste Bengali. His merry band of 43 ministers only followed their leader and took oath in Bengali. Mamata was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor M K Narayanan on the southwest lawn of the 208- year-old the governor' s residence, the Raj Bhavan, at about 1:01 pm. Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Union Home Minister P Chidambaram were among the many top leaders present on the occasion. Besides Buddadeb Bhattacharjee, Left Front chairman Biman Bose was also present, in a show of political courtesy that was long missing in the state. Bhattacharjee was invited along with his wife Meera by Deputy leader of the TMC Legislature Party Partha Chatterjee, who personally went to their Palm Avenue residence in the first visit by any Trinamool leader since the party' s inception in 1998. Top names in politics, business, art and culture attended the starry function though Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi could not attend owing to their preoccupation. It was an over three-fourth majority against the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)- led Left Front that had sealed Banerjee' s long held claim over the hot seat of Bengal, a state ruled by the reds for 34 straight years. When state election results were declared on May 13, the Congress-TMC alliance, led by Banerjee, won a thumping 227 seats in the 294-seat Assembly, while the Bhattacharjee-led Left were reduced to a mere 62 seats. Forty-three ministers take oath besides Mamata, a number that comes in contrast to her earlier assertions of having a small cabinet. Reports said that the final figure swelled thanks to her promise of representations from all regions and communities of the state and also commitments to her allies. The Congress will have seven ministers in Mamata' s cabinet, who herself resigned from the post of the Union Minister for Railways on Thursday, while the remaining 36 reportedly belong to her own party Trinamool Congress (TMC). The list of ministers from the TMC includes Amit Mitra, Partha Chatterjee, Manish Gupta, Subrata Mukherjee, Abdul Karim Chowdhury, Sadhan Pandey, Upen Biswas, Sabitri Mitra, Bratya Basu, Madan Mitra and Noore Alam Chowdhury. Unprecedented security arrangements have been made for the much-hyped function. Kolkata Police are said to be leaving no stone unturned to ensure the security and order. Quick response teams under the command of senior deputy commissioners have been deployed in and outside the Raj Bhavan compound and in front of the state secretariat Writers' Buildings. A two-kilometre radius around the Raj Bhavan, Shahid Minar and Writers' Buildings has been sanitized. Officers were posted on all tall buildings near the area. Giant screens have been put up at the Shahid Minar grounds and also at Metro Channel, near Esplanade, for the live telecast of the swearing-in ceremony. After the swearing-in ceremony Banerjee will head for the refurbished state secretariat Writers' Buildings in nearby BBD Bagh, to formally take charge of her new office. Mamata Banerjee was born on Jan 5 1955, in Kolkata to a lower-middle class family to Promileswar and Gayatri Banerjee. She began her political career with Congress as a student leader and became the general secretary of the Congress state women wing. Mamata majored with History from the Jogamaya Devi College, under Calcutta University. Later she earned a master' s degree in Islamic History from the University of Calcutta. But the turning point of Mamata Banerjee came in 1984 when she became a giant killer by defeating CPI-M leader Somnath Chatterjee from the Jadavpur Lok Sabha seat and pitch-forked herself in the rough-and- tumble of national politics that is intrinsically linked to the state from where she hails. She also became the General- Secretary of the All India Youth Congress and became one of the leaders close to the late Rajiv Gandhi. But West Bengal remained Mamata' s priority and her single point agenda was defeating the communists. In 1991, Banerjee fractured her head in an attack by Lalu Alam, a rowdy of the CPI- M, at the famous Hazra crossing of Kolkata, the scene of many protests by the leader in her neighbourhood. Mamata lost a seat in 1989 in an anti-Congress wave, but came back in 1991 general elections, having settled into the Calcutta South constituency. She retained the Kolkata South seat in the 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009 general elections. In 2004 when all other members of her party Trinamool Congress lost, she could manage to hold on to her seat. In 2004 Lok Sabha elections, she was the only Trinamool Congress MP from West Bengal. In the Rao government in 1991, Mamata Banerjee was made the Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development, Youth Affairs and Sports, and Women and Child Development. Differences with Congress party and the party' s leaders policy of cozying up with the Marxists prompted her to found Trinamool Congress in 1997. In 1999, Mamata Banerjee made the gamble of joining the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. She knew she would be losing the Muslim votes for joining the saffron alliance, but she still chose to join the NDA owing to her differences with the Congress. She became the Railways Ministry. The first taste of victory in West Bengal came in 2000 for Trinamool Congress when they won the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The next year, she quit NDA cabinet and again went back to hold the hands of Congress though that did not translate into much seats in West Bengal state elections. The alliance could garner only 86 seats. Mamata Banerjee lost the Kolkata corporation in 2005, owing to defection of mayor Subrata Mukherjee to Congress again after she fell out with her former colleague. But 2006 assembly polls came as a shocker for Mamata Banerjee. Trinamool Congress could win only 30 seats while the Left Front boasted its 235 seat strength in assembly and set out to industrialize West Bengal in its own terms. But 2006 also became a turning point for Mamata Banerjee with the outbreak of the Singur movement. The communists seized about 1000 acres of land in the fertile region of Singur, barely 40 km from Kolkata, against the wishes of the farmers to hand over the plot to Tata Motors for building a plant for the ultra cheap Nano car. Mamata Banerjee began a hunger strike for the farmers of Singur at Esplanade East in downtown Kolkata and her fast continued for 25 days in December that year, earning her an iconic status as a peaceful protester. Singur was followed by the CPI-M atrocities in Nandigram. Now Banerjee found a support group in the people of Bengal and the intelligentsia. Nandigram and Singur produced huge political mileage for Mamata Banerjee. In Panchayat elections in 2008, her party fared well. Also her Singur movement succeeded around that time with the Tatas deciding to pull out of Singur in 2008 and go to Gujarat. By then Mamata is a national icon for farmers' movement. With the Left meeting repeated electoral setbacks, the fortunes of Mamata rose. In the 2009 Lok Sabha polls she pulled off another victory by bagging 19 MP seats from West Bengal. Bagging 19 MP seats alone was no small achievement after her single seat status in 2004. Her alliance partner Congress bagged six. Mamata thus reversed the fortunes of 2004 when she had won only herself. —IBNS

Pak province cancels 6 US aid deals

Posted: 20 May 2011 07:21 PM PDT

LAHORE: Pakistan' s most populous province has cancelled six aid agreements with the United States in protest over the US. raid that killed Osama bin Laden, its law minister said. Pakistan hailed bin Laden' s death as a big step against militancy but was incensed by the raid in a garrison town not far from the capital, saying it was a violation of sovereignty. The operation severely strained already uneasy ties between the United States and Pakistan, whose cooperation is needed to stabilise Afghanistan. "We have cancelled six MOUs (memorandums of understanding) with the United States in the fields of health, education and solid waste management," said Rana Sanaullah, law minister of Punjab, the country' s political nerve centre. "We have told their concerned departments about our decision. This is our protest against the Abbottabad incident."

Angry Israel PM to take on Obama

Posted: 20 May 2011 07:19 PM PDT

WASHINGTON: US president Barack Obama opened White House talks with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday, as both men waged a public row over the shape of an elusive peace with the Palestinians. Netanyahu arrived at the White House with the two leaders embroiled in another spat, the latest to test their tense relationship, at a time of high significance as the Middle East is rocked by "Arab Spring Revolts." The Israeli PM, on a trip which will see him embraced by Republicans opposed to the US leader' s Israel policy, quarreled with the suggested parameters of peace deal laid out by Obama on Thursday. Obama said that territorial lines in place before the 1967 Arab- Israeli war combined with land- swaps should be the basis for talks on a peace deal with the Palestinians. Netanyahu has long opposed such a formulation, and his office issued a blunt statement saying such a scheme would leave it "indefensible" and would isolate major Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The prime minister arrived in Washington at dawn, with an aide saying his tough line was motivated by worries that Obama did not understand the threats Israel faces as popular revolts sweep the region.

Hollywood stars turn out for farewell Oprah show

Posted: 19 May 2011 01:31 AM PDT

Oprah Winfrey's quarter-century supreme reign over US television neared its end Tuesday night with a star-studded send-off featuring Beyonce, Madonna, Aretha Franklin, Tom Cruise, Michael Jordan and many others who honored the talk show queen's efforts to boost education and fight poverty. "She's a self-made woman who's been at the top of her game for over 25 years – and she's still kicking ass," Madonna told a delighted audience of about 13,000 in a Chicago arena. Wearing a purple gown, the pony-tailed Winfrey basked in the night of tributes from A-list celebrities and friends. Billed as Surprise Oprah! A Farewell Spectacular because Winfrey was kept in the dark about the guest list, the show will air in two parts on Monday and Tuesday. Winfrey's final original Oprah Winfrey Show, whose contents are still being kept under wraps, will air on Wednesday, bringing to a close 25 years of the most- watched daytime talk show on US television. "Your show has turned surprise into an art form," actor Tom Hanks told Winfrey on Tuesday. Madonna praised Winfrey for her courage. "It's no secret that millions of people are inspired by Oprah," she said. "I am one of those people. ... She fights for things she believes in, even if it makes her unpopular." A slimmed-down Aretha Franklin, now recovered from major surgery six months ago, sang "Amazing Grace" to a stunned Winfrey. Beyonce, who performed her new single "Run the World (Girls)," said that because of her, "Women everywhere have graduated to a new level of understanding of what we are, who we are, and who we can be." Maria Shriver, whose estranged husband Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday admitted fathering a child in an adulterous relationship, also came to Chicago to pay tribute to her 30-year friendship with Winfrey. "You've given me love, support, wisdom, and most of all, the truth," Shriver said. A beaming Cruise told Winfrey it was an honor to have been on her show 12 times since 1988. Referring to his first appearance on the show 23 years ago, Winfrey quipped, "You looked like you were 10." The special also included appearances by Will Smith, Oscar- winning actress Halle Berry, singer-actress Queen Latifah, Josh Groban, Patti LaBelle, Jerry Seinfeld, John Legend, broadcaster Diane Sawyer and basketball star Michael Jordan. Winfrey is wrapping the final season of her syndicated Chicago-based show before turning her attention to her fledgling OWN cable network, which was launched in January. Reuters

Al-Qaida releases posthumous Osama bin Laden's audio

Posted: 18 May 2011 08:18 PM PDT

CAIRO/WASHINGTON: Al-Qaida's media arm released in full a posthumous full audio message from Osama bin Laden in which he speaks on the wave of Arab protests sweeping the Mideast and North Africa in recent months, a US monitoring group said Wednesday. In the audio, the former al-Qaida leader, who was killed in a US raid on May 2 in Pakistan, praised revolutions sweeping the Arab world, and expressed joy at the victory of uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia. As-Sahab released the audio speech in a 12-minute, 37- second video posted on jihadist forums on May 18, 2011, "addressing Muslims", SITE Intelligence reported. A covert US Navy SEAL team killed bin Laden on May 2 at his Pakistan compound in Abbotabad. The general command of al-Qaida confirmed bin Laden's death in a statement dated May 3, released on jihadist forums May 6, SITE added. The service said it would soon publish a translated transcript of the message. "In that statement, the group indicated that bin Laden had recorded an audio one week prior to his death, addressing the revolutions and offering advice and guidance," the US monitoring group said. Meanwhile al-Qaida has chosen a former Egyptian special forces officer as interim leader of the violent extremist group following the death this month of Osama bin Laden, CNN and al-Jazeera reported on Tuesday. Saif al-Adel, a top Al-Qaeda strategist and senior military leader, has been tapped as "caretaker" chief of the group, CNN reported, citing former Libyan militant Noman Benotman, who has renounced al-Qaida's ideology. IMF chief put on suicide watch

Posted: 18 May 2011 12:56 AM PDT

WASHINGTON: International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn has been placed on suicide watch in his New York City jail cell four days after his arrest for allegedly sexually assaulting a hotel chamber maid. Strauss-Kahn, 62, who was a leading contender for the next French presidential election, is under 24-hour surveillance in protective isolation at New York's Riker's Island jail, ABC News reported. He has been made to wear a special jumpsuit, which lacks excess material or strings that an inmate could use to harm himself, and is designed to prevent inmates from concealing any objects, it said. Meanwhile, his alleged victim is still reeling from the attack she says took her completely by surprise, the news channel said citing a close friend. "She was still crying today," the friend was quoted as saying. "She was completely devastated. I was the first person she called." The alleged victim, a housekeeper at New York City's Sofitel Hotel, called the friend from the emergency room at St. Luke's Hospital, where she was examined by doctors and questioned by New York Police Department detectives Saturday night after the alleged attack. "She called me and said, 'Something really bad happened,'" he said. He described his friend, an immigrant from West Africa and the mother of a 15-year-old girl, as a "good Muslim" and "not the kind of woman to attack a man." "She didn't understand why he did such a thing," he said, adding that he believed in the US judicial system and that she would testify against Strauss-Kahn. She is being held at a safe but undisclosed location, he said.

World's biggest gold ring now worth $3 million

Posted: 18 May 2011 12:53 AM PDT

DUBAI: The value of a 63.856 kg, 21-carat gold ring on display in Dubai has shot up due to the spiralling price of the yellow metal, its owner has said. The ring, which has a Guinness Book of World Records certificate for being the world's biggest gold ring, is on display at the Deira Gold Souq (market) in Dubai. According to its owners, its value has multiplied several times over the years, due to the record gold price now. It is studded with 5.1 kg worth of precious stones from Signity Middle East and its creation was supported by the World Gold Council. "While it cost $547,000 to make the ring in the year 2000, the current value is worth over $3 million. This is the world's biggest gold ring and we have displayed it on behalf of Taiba, the Saudi Arabian jewellery maker who made this unique piece in 2000 when the gold price was only $250 per ounce," Kanz Jewellers Managing Director Anil Dhanak said. "Now the value of gold has gone up to $1,500 per ounce, so you can imagine how much fortune the idle gold ring has brought to its owner," Dhanak told Emirates 24/7. "The ring is currently owned by Taiba, but we have displayed it to promote much smaller wearable rings. This ring has inspired many gold enthusiasts to buy replicas," he said. The Najmat Taiba ring has a 2,200-mm perimeter, a 700-mm outer perimeter, a 490-mm inside diameter, 500-mm width on its back and 250-mm width on the ring bottom. It has 615 Swarovski stones embedded in it. Fifty-five workers worked 45 days continuously for 10 hours a day to make this piece.

Sex scandal IMF chief facing 74 years in jail

Posted: 17 May 2011 08:57 AM PDT

IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was behind bars in New York last night after being denied $1m (€ 705,000) bail by a judge who heard details of his alleged brutal sexual attack on a hotel chambermaid. The head of the IMF, who faces up to 74 years behind bars if convicted of a series of sex crimes, was remanded in custody as a "flight risk" after prosecutors said he would flee to Europe "just like Roman Polanski", the film director who has spent 32 years as a fugitive from the US. It was a crushing blow for the man who was until recently being considered a front-runner for the French presidency and who oversaw world finance. Looking tired, with a light stubble and wearing the same clothes as on Sunday, he listened as prosecutors told a Manhattan Criminal Court judge they were investigating whether he may have engaged in similar conduct once before. Defence lawyers denied the charges against their client. But as they did so, a French journalist yesterday added to the allegations against him by announcing that she was considering taking legal action for an alleged attack in 2002. Tristane Banon (31) said that she had not made the formal accusation before because she had been persuaded by her mother -- a Socialist politician -- to say nothing. It was Mr Strauss-Kahn's (62) first appearance in court since he allegedly sexually assaulted a chambermaid who came to clean his room at the Sofitel in Times Square. He was pulled off an Air France jet on Saturday, minutes before it left for Paris. He was supposed to be in Brussels, musing with fellow members of the global elite on how to spend the hundreds of billions of euro that were at his disposal just 48 hours earlier. Instead, at 10.50am yesterday he was led into the drab room 130 at Manhattan Criminal Court and placed beside a drug dealer who delivered takeaways for Texas Fried Chicken. When it came to his turn, Mr Strauss-Kahn was remanded in custody. He was formally charged with six crimes relating to the alleged sexual attack. Like every other defendant, he was made to stand and have his irises scanned to ensure he was not an impostor. The judge set Friday as the next date for the case. Graphic details were described by prosecutors. They alleged Mr Strauss-Kahn shut the door of his hotel room to prevent the maid from leaving. The judge's order that Mr Strauss-Kahn should be kept in custody in New York raised further questions about his future. The IMF board was due to meet informally yesterday for an update on its managing director. His second in command, John Lipsky, has already been put in charge in Mr Strauss-Kahn's absence. In an unpublished interview only two weeks before his arrest, Mr Strauss-Kahn suggested he could imagine a scenario in which he might be set up for rape. Conspiracy theories abounded in France yesterday after the publication of a curiously premonitory interview in the newspaper 'Liberation'. In court yesterday Judge Melissa Jackson was told by prosecutors how Mr Strauss-Kahn "sexually assaulted and attempted to forcibly rape" the 32-year-old maid, an African immigrant and mother. Graphic John McConnell, an assistant district attorney, outlined six charges in graphic detail. The maid immediately alerted colleagues, gave a "detailed and powerful" account, and selected Mr Strauss-Kahn from an identity parade, Judge Jackson was told. The woman underwent tests at a local hospital. "The findings during that examination corroborate her account," Mr McConnell said. Mr Strauss-Kahn had, prior to the hearing, consented to a DNA test. Mr McConnell said Mr Strauss- Kahn should be denied bail as he had "no incentive to stay in this country and every incentive and resource to leave", with an "extensive network of contacts around the world". Washington had no extradition arrangement with Paris, he added. - Jon Swaine in New York Irish Independent

Emotional sex to woo your lady love

Posted: 17 May 2011 08:43 AM PDT

A lot has been said about the ideal way to prepare your woman for a steamy night of passion. From indulging in prolonged foreplay to hitting the passion-pinnacle to merely kissing and cuddling to arouse your lover ...here are a few traits of the perfect ' love- maker. ' Most lovers tend to ignore the fact that for a satisfying act of love-making, the base work has to emanate from a woman's brain. You' ll be surprised to know that without even the slightest form of touching you can make your woman experience a sense of heightened arousal that is usually synonymous with physical intimacy. ' Emotional sex' is as gratifying as ' physical sex. Making your lady love experience the same rush of passion without even a single touch is definitely possible but requires a high degree of understanding between the couple. Sex expert Dr. Mahinder Watsa says, "Sex starts in the brain, much before it culminates in the bed. Especially in women, the brain needs to be geared up emotionally for a satisfying communion as it is an equal player like the body in the game of love." On the other hand, it is also known that for men ' lovemaking' involves getting physically close, while women dig emotional intimacy. "The 4Ts in Trust, Time, Talk and Touch - form the foundation for passionate love making," states Dr. Watsa, adding, "The fourth T cannot be successful until you have done the required ground work using the first three Ts." To prepare for a passionate grand finale, indulge in some ' emotional sex' triggered off by first three Ts - Trust, Time, Talk. Here' s all that you can do to prepare your lady love for some ' emotional sex' that will surely lead to some hot and steamy action between the sheets. It might appear too much of an effort, but once she' s just there you' ll have enough time to bask in the glory of your success. So, get started... Work on your attitude The preparation for a sexual session can often leave one exhausted, so it' s important that you have the right romantic attitude. "A man with a romantic attitude won' t mind testing his limits to woo his lay love," says Priya Bakshi, a relationship expert adding, "He would have the heart to shower all his love, affection, care and passion on his lady." Remember that without a romantic attitude, even the most lavish dinner dates and exquisite presents appear unimpressive and superficial. So, if you are ' head over heels' in love with your gal, be amorous and shower her with unlimited and unconditional love and affection. Communicate your feelings and bond on common areas of interest. Do what it takes to make her feel loved This goes beyond kissing and cuddling. Sometimes surprisingly enough, feelings that even the priciest of diamonds fail to express to your lover can be conveyed through a small personalised love note. Find out how your lady wants to be wooed. What leaves her speechless? What renders her in a bad need of a tight hug from you? And what makes her want to melt in your arms? A walk in a moonlit garden, listening to her without interruption or maybe just looking at her every now and then with eyes full of love and admiration for her...can be the simplest, yet trickiest moves to seduce her senses! It is all about time! Observe her... After years of being together, most of us start taking our partners for granted. Why does that happen? Answers Bakshi, "It often happens that partners get so tied up in their hectic schedules that giving a patient glance to their better half or taking the time to shower her with compliments become rare, thus leading to a loss of sexual desire at times." So, if you want to tickle her mood the right way, start noticing the slightest changes in her appearance. Open your heart and shower her with compliments every now and then, without waiting for special occasions. Speak your mind... Men have a tendency to assume that their girlfriend/wife knows how and what they feel about them, how much they love and care for them. But what they fail to realise is the fact that putting words into their thoughts often, will only make their partners feel adored. "I realised the magic of words on the day when casually while sipping our bed tea, I told my wife that she was great in bed last night. Not only could I see that blushing, but surprisingly enough she prepared herself the whole day so as to give me another memorable experience the following night. There was everything from flowers, wine and chocolates and her ofcourse," relates Madhur Gupta, a Mumbai-based marketing professional. So, get out of the cocoon of ' she knows it all' and share what you love about your girl explicitly and you are bound to see her shunning all inhibitions and getting ready to have another round of sex with you. So, go ahead and try the magic of ' emotional sex' to make her long for you and yearn for your touch.

Reality: White lies become the saviour. Maintaining 100% honesty and transparency in a relationship is like aspiring for a ' fairy land' . Whether to safeguard your own interest, or to avoid hurting your partner, white lies often become a ' blessing in disguise.' "Altering the truth or substituting it with white lies has nothing to do with wrong intentions. It' s all about checking, balancing and adapting to a particular situation," says relationship expert, Kamal Khurana. "Full truth that seems irrelevant in a particular situation or may apparently hamper your relationship is better kept under wraps, until specifically asked for," adds Khurana. Sometimes white lies are any day a better option! False advice #2: Never sleep over a fight! "As a part of the regular advising sessions, my mom emphasised on thrashing out all issues before sleeping. The habit of hitting the sack with a mind bogged down with frustration and anger ends up ruining the next day and in turn spoiling the relationship," shares Madhumita Ganguly, a Delhi-based advertising professional. But the reality is different. Reality: Sleep can only suppress the issues to pop up again. Sleeping might appear as an ideal solution to a fight, but psychologist Aroona Broota says it' s actually impractical and impossible to resolve an issue before sleeping. Usually, before retiring to the bed, both partners are exhausted with the day' s work. And in such a state you cannot expect your sleepy and crotchety partner to give you due attention. Hence, there' s no question of figuring out a solution. Aroona says, "The issue deserves patience and due attention. So, don' t try to resolve them at night, but at the same time, don' t forget the issue either. Decide a time to resolve it the other day and sleep. Sleep eases your anger and will leave you with a better frame of mind the next day. Take time out from your schedule and meet at a place out side your home and solve the issue forever, rather than sleeping over it every time it erupts." False advise # 3: No ' sorries' and no ' thank you' s' in love! When actor Salman Khan penned the rule of ' Pyar mein no ' sorry' and no ' thank you'" in the 90s romantic flick Maine Pyar Kiya, it seemed everyone took it a tad too seriously. And soon the age-old mannerisms of saying a meaningful sorry after a fight or a hearty thank you for partner' s effort went straight out of the window, with a cover-up that love is way deeper than mere petty ' thank-yous and sorries'! Reality: Apologising and acknowledging your partner' s effort does make a difference. It' s time to get real and get back to those nursery lessons that highlighted the importance of sorry and thank you. Fights and arguments do happen, but not apologising shows that you are taking your partner for granted and might give rise to ego-hassles in the long run. "I thought my husband would understand that I was feeling guilty for our fight but, somehow I didn' t feel the need of saying sorry. But that spoilt the situation further," shares Smita Kathuria, a Mumbai-based bank executive. Psychologist Aroona says, "Good manners work everywhere. Saying sorry and thank-you should come as naturally as washing your hands when they get dirty. These are not just words, but the testimony of the fact that you are realising and assuring your better half that you'll amend the wrong. The the lack of it simply shows your casual approach towards a relationship. False advice # 4: Any time is good time to have a baby. Whenever the personal equation between partners tend to go topsy-turvy, mommies and grannies come to the fore with the typical advice – plan a baby. The birth of a baby is often related to a fresh lease of life in a stagnating relationship. It is thought that the baby will fill up the void in a couple' s life making them forget their mutual differences. Reality: Baby at the wrong time can make it worse! "Coming of a baby when the parents don' t feel the need to have a child together can be disastrous," says relationship expert, Arvinder Kaur, adding, "Parenting is a highly specialized and serious business. Until the parents clear the emotional mess between them and are financially ready, the baby should ideally wait. Else, their woes will get multiplied and the brunt will be borne by the baby, who will be many times exploited as a bait and bargaining device to keep the marriage intact." False advice # 5: Marriage is not only about sex. Thanks to gruelling urban schedules, sex is the last thing on a modern couples' mind. With due respect to the age old suggestion – ' spending time together is important' , they often consider sex to be too much of an effort and find a happy escape in heart-to-heart talks. Reality: Marriage means being together and you can' t find a glue better than sex. Well, you need not make love every night, but at the same time, you cannot take it completely out of your schedule! "It has to be a priority," says Arvinder. "Sex allows your partner to make the most intimate contact with you, which strengthens bonding. Sex in any form – caressing, holding, love making or having intercourse, is the most important exercise in vulnerability, which also lends physical comfort. The frequency of intercourse may come down with age, health factors and time, but for a healthy marriage you cannot negate the existence of having regular sex".

Bomb found ahead of queen's Dublin trip

DUBLIN: Irish soldiers defused a bomb near Dublin overnight ahead of a visit by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II scheduled to start on Tuesday, Irish police and the military said. "A viable explosive device was found on a bus yesterday evening in Maynooth," near Dublin, a police spokesman said, adding that police had been tipped off by an anonymous call. The device was defused by the Irish army, he said. An Irish defence forces spokesman confirmed that an army bomb disposal squad had made safe "a viable improvised device" early Tuesday at Maynooth in County Kildare. "We can't give any details about the device but it was viable. It was on a bus and by the time our team was called in the bus was evacuated and parked at a bus stop," the spokesman said. "The device was made safe in situ," he added. The queen's visit, the first by a British monarch to Ireland since independence since 1922, is surrounded by a massive security operation amid the threat of Irish republican terrorism. British police said they had received a bomb threat for central London from Irish dissident republicans on Monday.

Pope orders action on sex abuse

Posted: 16 May 2011 10:40 AM PDT

Pope Benedict has told bishops around the world to promptly report all suspected cases of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic priests to local police in new guidelines he has issued.

Set out in a letter, the guidelines are the latest effort to eradicate child sex abuse in the Roman Catholic Church. It incorporates sweeping revisions made last year to the Church's laws on sexual abuse. But victims' groups are critical of the move, saying it does not go far enough. The letter is intended to help every diocese draw up its own guidelines, based on a global approach, but in line with local criminal law. These must be sent to the Vatican for review within a year. "Sex abuse of minors is not just a canonical delict [crime], but also a crime prosecuted by civil law", the letter said, stressing that local civil law "should always be followed". The new guidelines say bishops should seek to protect minors and help victims of paedophile priests find assistance and reconciliation. "The responsibility for dealing with crimes of sexual abuse of minors by clerics belongs in the first place to the diocesan bishop," the letter says. "The guidelines... seek to protect minors and to help victims in finding assistance and reconciliation," the letter says, adding that it was up to bishops to notify the authorities regarding a suspected paedophile priest. The clergy should be "helped to recognise the potential signs of abuse" and those suspected of paedophilia should be suspended "until the accusation is clarified". Bishops are urged to be more careful in choosing candidates for the priesthood and weed out early those who are or could become sex abusers. The revisions made last year to the Church's laws on sexual abuse doubled a statute of limitations for disciplinary action against priests and extended the use of fast-track procedures to defrock them. 'No tolerance' But victims' groups, who have deplored the Vatican's secrecy over sex crimes, have condemned the guidelines. "As an absolute minimum, there should be a global no-tolerance policy," said the US victims' group Survivors' Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP). "Fundamentally, the reason that Church officials ignore, conceal and mishandle sex crimes is because they can." The new Vatican guidelines come 20 years after widespread reports of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic priests in many countries first came to the notice of Church authorities, says the BBC's David Willey in Rome. Hitherto, the Vatican has often appeared to be more interested in protecting priests from false accusations, rather than in punishing them, our correspondent says. Now the accent is increasingly upon prompt and full communication to the proper local civil authorities of suspected crimes of sexual abuse of minors. Bomb warning received in London

Posted: 16 May 2011 10:35 AM PDT

A bomb threat for London has been issued by Irish dissidents in the first coded warning outside Northern Ireland in 10 years, officials say.

Streets around the Mall were closed for five hours on Monday morning amid a major security alert. Whitehall officials said the call with the coded warning came from a number in the Irish Republic on Sunday evening. The threat level for Northern Ireland-related terrorism, which stands at severe, has not been changed. The warning comes ahead of the Queen's historic visit to the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday, amid a massive security operation. Vigilance urged The Metropolitan Police said the threat was not specific regarding location or time. A Scotland Yard spokesman said in a statement: "All officers have been advised to be highly vigilant to ensure the safety of London." The public were urged to go about their normal business but to look out for "unusual activity or behaviour". Earlier on Monday, The Mall and Carlton House Terrace were closed after a security alert was sparked by a break-in at Carlton Gardens. The break-in is thought to have taken place at 2 Carlton Gardens, which houses the Institute for Government think tank. That is adjacent to the foreign secretary's residence, where William Hague is believed to have been at the time. 'Within the know' Pictures from the scene showed a van of search dogs, and the Met's underwater and confined spaces search team. Roads around Northumberland Avenue were also closed while a bag was destroyed in a controlled explosion. The roads have now re-opened. BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner said that the call with the coded bomb threat "was not directly related to the break-in near the foreign secretary's house in Carlton Gardens or the abandoned suitcase near Trafalgar Square, but both were taken very seriously in the light of the bomb threat." BBC security correspondent Gordon Corera said the level of security in the Republic of Ireland would make it difficult for dissidents to disrupt the Queen's trip there. "There was always a concern that timed with the visit there was the possibility of something happening in Northern Ireland, or perhaps in Britain," he said. 'Real, serious threat' The former security minister, Lord West, said that if a coded message was being used, then it would have come from someone "within the know, within the circle". He added: "We know very well that this very, very tiny number of dissidents who can cause mayhem way beyond the scale of the numbers there, are absolutely set on trying to revert to the bloodshed, mayhem and bloody massacres of the past." A Home Office spokesman said the UK faced a "real and serious threat from terrorism". "The threat level to Great Britain from Northern Irish- related terrorism remains at substantial, which means that an attack is a strong possibility. "There is a continuing need for vigilance and the public should report any suspicious activity to the police." IMF chief denied bail on sex charges

Posted: 16 May 2011 10:32 AM PDT

A court in New York has remanded IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn in custody on charges of sexual assault.

The judge said Mr Strauss-Kahn, 62, is a flight risk. He was arrested on Saturday after boarding a plane, and accused of trying to rape a hotel maid. Mr Strauss-Kahn, who had been seen as a contender in France's 2012 presidential election, denies the allegations His lawyer expressed disappointment at bail being denied, but said his client would be exonerated. "This battle has just begun," defence lawyer Benjamin Brafman told the court. The charges relate to an alleged assault at the Times Square Sofitel hotel in New York. Mr Strauss-Kahn was detained on board an Air France flight at New York's John F Kennedy airport minutes before take-off. The IMF chief, 62, underwent medical examinations on Sunday. Police were looking for scratches or any other evidence of his alleged assault on the chambermaid earlier in the day. He was later charged with a "criminal sexual act, unlawful imprisonment and attempted rape". Police say the 32-year-old maid who made the allegations has formally identified him in a line-up. Until he was arrested, Mr Strauss-Kahn was considered a favourite to become the Socialist candidate for the French presidency next year. Opinion polls gave him a good chance of defeating President Nicolas Sarkozy. Socialist party president Martine Aubry described his arrest as a "thunderbolt" but called for Mr Strauss-Kahn to be presumed innocent. Mr Strauss-Kahn's wife, French TV personality Anne Sinclair, has also protested his innocence. Meanwhile, another allegation against Mr Strauss-Kahn has emerged. A French writer says she may file a complaint for an alleged sexual assault in 2002. Tristane Banon, 31, says Mr Strauss-Kahn tried to rape her when she went to interview him for a book she was writing. "We're planning to make a complaint," Ms Banon's lawyer told AFP news agency. Mr Strauss-Kahn's lawyers have so far not responded to the allegation. The European Union says the scandal should not affect bail- outs for eurozone countries. The IMF has played a central role in organising rescue packages for the troubled economies of Portugal and Greece, and Mr Strauss-Kahn had been due to attend an EU finance ministers' meeting in Brussels to discuss the bail-outs. The BBC's Chris Morris in Brussels says he has gained the trust of countries in Europe which are giving financial assistance, and those which are receiving it. Saudi diplomat shot dead in Pakistan

Posted: 16 May 2011 10:18 AM PDT

ISLAMABAD: A Saudi Arabian diplomat was shot and killed by unidentified attackers in Karachi on Monday, just five days after explosives devices were lobbed at the Saudi consulate in the southern Pakistani port city. The Saudi diplomat, identified in media reports as Hasan M M Al- Kahtani, was attacked by four gunmen riding two motorcycles while he was driving to work. The attack occurred a short distance from the Bahrain consulate. The Saudi Embassy in Islamabad confirmed that the victim was a diplomat. Police officials said the gunmen intercepted the car and fired over a dozen bullets at the victim. He was declared dead on arrival at the Jinnah Hospital. No group claimed responsibility for the attack. On May 11, two men riding a motorcycle lobbed two low intensity explosive devices at the Saudi consulate in Karachi though no one was injured in the attack. Saudi officials said the blasts caused minor damage to buildings within the consulate compound. The attacks came in the wake of the May 2 raid by US special forces in the garrison city of Abbottabad that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Saudi assistant foreign minister Prince Khaled bin Saud had urged Pakistani authorities to ensure the protection of the kingdom's diplomatic missions in the country.
