Priyanka-Shahid break ke baad!

Posted: 27 Nov 2010 06:21 PM PST

They remain one of Bollywood's biggest mysteries. Were Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor dating? Bollywood says yes, of course, but the stars themselves never accepted the situation and screamed their single status fromthe rooftops. Though when the fever was reportedly at its pitch, Priyanka and Shahid sizzled in Kaminey, andthe world which always loves a pair of lovers, sighed in satisfaction at this new jodi. For the media, of course, this was all grist to the mill... and from every sighting of the couple to their recent alleged break-up, it all made news. Now comes the twist in the tale. Enter Kunal Kohli, with a script forwhich he has signed Shahid and now wants Priyanka. Not so long ago he was miffed with Priyanka because her hectic schedule didn'tgive her dates to do his film with Saif Ali Khan. But Kunal is ready toforget the past. He is meeting Priyanka to talk about his film that will bring Shahid and her back onscreen. The filmmaker will also approach three other actresses because his film has two female leads playing pivotal roles. Katrina Kaif, Sonakshi Sinha and Deepika Padukone are on topof the list. But will Priyanka agree, given that she is sick of people always talking about her equation with Shahid and ignoring her work? And that every story about her somehow brings Shahid into the picture? There will be curiosity to see the actors working together again. Plus the movie is a love story so one can imagine the chemistry that will be on offer in case the two team up. Kunal, however, remained tight-lipped. "It is true that Shahid has been signed on. Itis a love story spanning a 100 years. I cannot comment on the actresses as we haven't started casting yet," is all he said. Shahid told BT, "I have enjoyed Kunal's works in the past whether it's Hum Tum or Fanaa and I'm lookingforward to this love story. Whoever he decides to be cast opposite me, I'm okay with it."

All's fine between Arjun, SRK

Shah Rukh Khan and Arjun Rampalapparently had a brief tiff over payment issues and the Bollywoodgrapevine had it that the closest of friends weren't close anymore. Arjun was reportedly upset that he was not getting his due for working in SRK's forthcoming movie Don 2. It is believed that Arjun, after films like Rajneeti, Housefull and We Are Family, had hiked his fee which did not go down too well with SRK. Reports of their fall-out hit headlines, but BT believes the boys are bonding big time again. Have they buried their differences and moved on? Our informer certainly say so. BT has learned that Arjun, who celebrated his birthday on Friday in Delhi at his private club, was missing SRK. King Khan, who is shooting for his home production Don 2 in Berlin, is in the middle of a very gruelling schedule and could not fly down to celebrate with Arjun. However, SRK apparently intends to make it up to his buddy by throwing a party for him once he is back in town. Arjun admitted, "It is sad that some of my friends including SRK could not be there for my birthday. But we don't really needoccasions. I will catch up with SRK when we both have time to bond.He and I have no problems with each other. This year I cannot travel during the December holidays. I have my plate full. Otherwise, we generally look to travel together." Our informer added, "They are too mature to let gossip ruin their relationship. Even if they have had differences, they are not letting it hamper things. Arjunand SRK are planning to meet up soon for a boy bonding session. Their wives won't be part of it. This session is expected to cement their friendship further."

Abhishek’s feeling patriotic!

Posted: 27 Nov 2010 06:18 PM PST

Ashutosh Gowarikar's period film Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey is very close to Abhishek Bachchan's heart as this is the first time that he is playing a patriotic character. "Patriotism is a strong emotion", says Abhishek Bachchan who portrays the character of Surjya Sen, a revolutionary who played an important role during anti-British freedom movement in Chittagong. "To play Surjya Sen was a big responsibility for me. He was a great man and one can't be dishonest with such a character. You have to be responsible enough to portray the character of a person who was one of the biggest contributions in India's freedom movement. It was a big challenge for us to get his look and mannerisms correct since there was no proper picture of his for reference", says Abhishek Bachchan who will be seen in a very different look in this film. He further informs that their shooting used to start early every morning with flag hoisting and national anthem which helpedthem to get a feel of their characters and play their parts more convincingly. "The national anthem used to boost the patriotic feel in all of us. The experience was extremely unforgettable. Shooting the flag hoisting sequence brought tears in my eyes. Now I respect the factthat because of their sacrifice weare free today." Abhishek further laments the factthat not many know about SurjyaSen and the story of such a significant freedom fighter hasn't been told before. "Surjya was a teacher by profession and at the same time he was a revolutionarywho played an important role in anti-British freedom movement in Chittagong. His name should be taken with the likes of Bhagat Singh".

The Rich Tradition of Nilganj, Kishoreganj

Posted: 27 Nov 2010 12:14 PM PST

undefined
Shiva temple (right) in which Chandrabati used to pray next to the Manasha temple
Kishoreganj a northern district of Dhaka, is enriched with archaeological heritage.
At first the city seems like any other district with lots of rickshaws and narrow roads. Some locals inform us that the city has not changed much in the last 15 years or so. The people are very friendly and hospitable. There are many small teashops here and there, full of customers and even people you don't know will offer you tea.
The river Norshunda flows across the city and people love fishing even during normal working hours. In many places, many of them can be seen sitting patiently with fishing hooks by the river and also on bhelas (rafts).

Dewan Amin Dau Khan, four-teenth ancestor
of Isa Khan
People are very proud of and talk a lot about their rich cultural heritage. Poems of Chandrabati are a hot topic. They talk very highly about Jangalbari, and about boating on the haor. We decided to visit Chandrabati's house Jangalbari.
Chandrabati is the first woman Bangali poet whose tragic life has touched many hearts. She was born in the 16th century in a Brahmun family. Her parents were Dija Bangshidash and Sholochona. Chandrabati was guided by her father, another historical personality well-known for his gathas or odes such as Mahua and Komola.
Beautiful Chandrabati was in love with a Brahmin boy called Joychandra. The two were to get married when suddenly Joychandra jilted her for another woman. Chandrabati, heart broken decided to remain celibate all her life. Seeing her in such grief Chandrabati's father advised her to occupy herself reciting the Ramayana and in praying. Her loving father Dija also made a separate Shiva temple for her to pray next to his manasha temple.
Chandrabati devoted herself to reciting and, writing odes and in praying. Some of her well-known odes are: Malua, Dossho Kenaram and Ramayana Katha (incomplete).

Isa Khan
Joychandra soon realised that he still loved Chandrabati and tried to win her back. As the legend goes, one day while Chandrabati was praying in her closed-door temple, Joychandra came to her begging to come back. As she was not opening the door, Joychandra wrote a love letter on the temple wall with red malati flowers. When Chandrabati opened the door, it was too late-- Joychandra had committed suicide by drowning himself in the river next to the temple. Chandrabati could not bear this sight and she too took her own life.
Chandrabati's ancestors still live in that village. The old building where she used to live is partially used by another family. Her study-cum-bedroom is now part of their home. We could not visit that room but fortunately was able to meet her ancestor, Tulshi Das, who continues to live in the other part of the building. He regularly prays at the temple. That historical river (some call it Puleshori, some call Bateshori) is now dead , leaving behind a big canal in front of the temple.
The government has declared these two temples as national heritage sites, but conditions of these temples are worsening according to Tulshi Das. He says that there is a school in Chandrabati's name but the historical house, which was built by Dija, is totally damaged.

Tulshi Das, descendant of Chandrabati
Das hopes that the government and individuals will come forward to repair this historical place and build a heritage museum in memory of Chandrabati.
Jangalbari Fort is another renowned historical place to visit in Kishoreganj. It is situated in Jangalbari under Karimganj upazila.
The crumbling fort seems to have a circular front. It was one of the strongest outposts of Isa Khan. He built a number of structures inside the fort. According to the locals, there were 40 rooms in the fort that were mostly destroyed during an earthquake in the year 1300 (Bangla calendar).
Ancestors of Isa Khan moved to Jangalbari Fort from Sonargaon when Musa Khan, son of Isa Khan, surrendered in the year 1611.
The fourteenth ancestor of Isa Khan still lives in the fort. We had the pleasure of meeting Dewan Amin Dau Khan and his daughters and sons.
People from different places come to visit this historical fort with great interest. The baithakkhana, the outer part of the fort, still has traces of its magnificent art work. The ruining fort in ruins badly needs renovation and maintenance. If the government could come forward to take care of this historical place or to assist ancestors of Isa Khan then this historical site could be saved.

Sonakshi Sinha in an urban role for Farah Khan’s next

Posted: 27 Nov 2010 08:31 AM PST

Though Sonakshi Sinha got rave reviews and enough applause for her beauty and also her performance in the superhit 'Dabangg', it was Malaika Arora Khan who grabbed the oomph trophy for her item number 'Munni Badnaam'. Now, Sonakshi iscoming with Akshay Kumar in Farah Khan's next but she won't have a sizzling item number in themovie as there is no scope for it. Says Farah Khan who is the co-producer of the film along withShirish Kunder and Akshay Kumar,"Rest assured, she wouldn't be getting into a 'Sheila Ki Jawani' mode for our next film. After all her role in the film doesn't demand that such a situation for that at all." After Katrina's dance number in my upcoming film, I know that audience will expect yet another stylized yet sensual item song from Sonakshi as well. However, we can't place an item number just for the sake of it", she added. However, Sonakshi will be seen in a glamorous and urban role in thefilm as director Shirish says, "Sonakshi plays an urban girl in the film so yes, she would be seenin the Western outfits. I am awarethat audience want more of her after DABANGG. With our film, there would be a handful of her as she has a role of substance. She isn't there just for 3-4 scenes." This is Shirish's second film after JAAN-E-MANN.

Kanimozhi Movie Review

Posted: 27 Nov 2010 08:03 AM PST

Movie Review: Kanimozhi; Cast: Jai, Shazahn Padamsee, Vijay Vasanth; Director: Sripathy Rangasamy; Rating: ** - An Utter Disappointment. Considering that it was named 'Kanimozhi' many were under the impression that the film would have some relation to today's political condition in Tamil Nadu. Fortunately or unfortunately, it does not. On the contrary, 'Kanimozhi' is an age old love story with an overdose of philosophical twists. Both the screenplay and the story of the Tamil flick fail to impress. But we must say that Sripathy Rangasamy did a good job considering that this is his debut venture. At least he handles the lead characters well giving them individual spaces, albeit very few, to showcase their acting skills, but the actors refuse to make use of it delivering a very lacklustre performance. The story centers on a middle class boy Rajesh (played by Jai) who falls in love with a girl (played by Shazahn Padamsee). The strange thing is he never makes an attempt to know the name of his love interest till the end of the film! However, this boybelieves that everything in life delivers positive results and hence the girl loves him too. It is when he decides to express his love that everything in his life changes. Will it change for good orfor bad is something that you will have to visit theaters to know! Even in this extremely poor storyline, Jai puts up an average performance as Rajesh. But lead actress Shahzahn Padamsee is an utter disappointment. She manages to look good but puts on only a single expression throughout the movie. The only good part of 'Kanimozhi' is its running time. With less than two hours of screen time, it means less torture for viewers of the Tamil flick. -- Sampurn Wire

Asha Bhosle: Excited To Record Live After A Gap Of 30 Years

Posted: 27 Nov 2010 08:01 AM PST

November 27, 2010: Veteran singer Asha Bhosle went through an age-old experience after about 30 years and she was visibly very excited about it. Yes, she got to record live for an album, which is something not executed at all in recent times. She has recorded an album titled "Naina Lagai Ke" with singer-sitarist Shujaat Khan, where all the songs are traditional and classical-based. Speaking on her new album, she said that if a song is genuinely melodious it does not need the help of an orchestra. She also commented on the present song recording system. According to her, today's artists do not have to sing the songs at one go instead they can record it in parts. But earlier in case of live recordings singers had to sing theentire song together and Asha loves it that way. She further added that she had afantastic time recording it as "there was no interruption". She also said that she felt nice recording with traditional instruments as "all tunes and rhythms were in sync" and improvisations could be done later. No rehearsals were done before recording. 77-year-old Asha went out the memory lane when she was askedabout her previous live recording. It was with Ghulam Ali, she said. "Naina Lagai Ke" is being producedby SaReGaMaPa where she is working with a classical musician after a long time of 14 years. -- Sampurn Wire

Nandalala Review

Posted: 27 Nov 2010 07:53 AM PST

Movie: Nandalala, Cast: Mysskin, Ashwath Ram, Snigdha and others, Director: Mysskin; Music: Ilaiyaraaja; Rating: ***1/2 Mysskin's "Nandalala", which has finally hit the screens long after it had been completed, has come out as a movie with artistic features without losing the popular elements. Though the accusations that he has 'adapted' the theme of Japanese film "Kikujiro" are quite reasonable, there is no denying the fact that Mysskin has provedyet again that he is a good filmmaker. He has the talent to transfer the emotions on screen across to the audiences - which issomething unique. "Nandalala" is all about two peoplewho are in search of their mothers. Destiny puts them together. They travel through several places to reach their respective destinations. The journey by Bhaskar (Mysskin), who is mentally disturbed, and Akhilesh (Ashwath Ram), a schoolboy, has been told in a gripping manner. Their journey turns out to be a revealing experience that changes their lives for the better. Both walk around without knowing the harshness and striking realities of the world around them. Battered and bruised by many, they also meet some good people who help them a lot. The travel reveals the greatness of human life. Many times hostile people turn out to be good after realising the real position of both of them. Their innocence, helplessness and affection change others too. The scene that shows a physicallyhandicapped person moves the audience. Even the climax is quite emotional and heartening. Cinematographer Mahesh has done a marvellous work. The visuals are quite amazing. The way he has captured the landscape of Tamil Nadu is excellent. Ashwath Ram, Mysskin and Snigdha have done their parts very well. Their performances lift the film to another level. Mysskin, who is known for shapingeven the small characters well, has done it again. The characters of the tender coconut seller, granny, maid, policeman, lorry driver and ice cream seller are pleasant to watch. The dialogues are realistic and poignant. On the flipside, the fact that Mysskin has got inspired from"Kikujiro" does cast a shadow on the merits of the filmmaker. Though he has deftly adapted theoriginal to fit into the Tamil milieu, the repetition of the characters like the bald two-member biker gang guys, the farmer and the lorry driver from Kikujiro seems to be too much to digest. Ilaiyaraaja's music is a huge plus point to the movie. His background score adds immense value to it. The sequence when Mysskin meets his mother and thelullaby that Ilaiyaraaja sings in thebackground would bring tears to anybody's eyes. Despite lacking originality,"Nandalala" works a big way with its stunning visuals, music, script and performances.
