Vidya Balan should avoid pitfall of doing central parts: Shabana

Posted: 22 Mar 2012 12:48 PM PDT

Shabana Azmi liked Vidya Balan's performance in "Kahaani" so much that she could see glimpses of herself in her. At the same time, she feels the young actress should avoid the pitfall of accepting only central parts.

"Somewhere I feel Vidya has made the daring but right career choices. I see glimpses of my own involvement with my roles in Vidya Balan," say Shabana appreciatively after watching Balan in" Kahaani".

Shabana is currently playing a wily politician in Rajkot for Vishal Bhardwaj's "Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola". She took time off from her shooting to watch Sujoy Ghosh's masterpiece that is still going houseful.

"I had to watch 'Kahaani' because of Vidya. I was bowled over by her performance. As an actor, I could see she was making all the right moves throughout the film. There was not a single artificial note in her performance," said Shabana, known for powerful performances in "Arth", "Masoom", "Fire" and "Godmother".

But Shabana sounds a note of caution in the euphoria surrounding Vidya's rise to the top.

"If she continues to dominate her films, she might very soon face a scarcity of co-stars. Heroes might be apprehensive about being paired with her," said the 61-year-old who faced that situation when films featuring her in the central role co-starred Vinod Mehra or Marc Zuber.

In "Kahaani", Vidya found the Bengali star Parambrata Chatterjee sportingly supporting her heroine-centric presence in the film. But would she run out of co-stars in her future efforts at hero-giri?

"Vidya should avoid the pitfall of only doing central parts. She should also enjoy doing peripheral parts as much as the pivotal ones. Being the centre of attention could be addictive. She must learn to also be part of a cinema that doesn't focus on her but has something important to say," suggested Shabana. – IANS

Amitabh Bachchan: My sitar, my sarod, my piano and me…

Posted: 22 Mar 2012 03:31 AM PDT

Drawing close to his 70s, Amitabh Bachchan is still bubbling with energy and enthusiasm. The actor has decided to give a new turn to his life by learning sitar and sarod.
"Okaay! So am getting into the business of acquiring a sitar and a sarod soon enough so I may have the pleasure to be pulling a few strings!!" Amitabh Bachchan wrote on his blog bigb.bigadda.com.
"These are times I shall look forward to… my sitar, my sarod, my piano and me… sounds like the title of a really bad book or movie!
"But… though I may be able to learn the instruments now, just the fact that I shall be holding them and pretending to be some great master, shall indeed be of a great interest and value to me," he added.
Big B has a certain call for music. In fact, when he played the role of a singer in his 1973 film, 'Abhimaan', many of his fans were totally convinced that he had actually played the sitar in the film.
"In the early days of mine in the film industry, someone took pictures of mine holding or playing a sitar, I think as property for the decoration of the walls of the sets of our film 'Abhimaan' …
"Now no one is willing to believe that I do not play the sitar… 'stop trying to kid us Mr B, we've seen pictures of yours with the sitar" ! What does one say to such a misconception !" he posted.

Pakistan bans the release of ‘Agent Vinod’ in their country

Posted: 22 Mar 2012 03:30 AM PDT

Despite the fact that the lead female in Saif Ali Khan's 'Agent Vinod' is a Pakistani girl, Pakistan's Censor board has banned the release of 'Agent Vinod' in the country, the reason being the fact that the film has references to the ISI. Saif playing a RAW agent, the film has certain references to the strenuous relationship between India and Pakistan.
Saif Ali Khan calls it a shame and says, "It is a shame that the movie is banned, with no offence to anyone, as the idea is to have open films between the two countries.
I was proud that this film was to release there."
"This is a realistic kind of a thriller. We have shown that there are some negative elements in Pakistan towards India and their Censor have a problem showing that. We have shown a few most-wanted criminals, those that are harbored in Pakistan, which is a known fact. May be they have taken offense to that."
"Pakistan forms a large portion of our audience. The minute you put a censorship or ban, people will make sure they watch it. And we want them to see the film. In fact we wanted them to see the mujra performed by Kareena," he added.

Saifeena promotes Agent Vinod at Phoenix Mall

As Saif Ali Khan's ambitious project 'Agent Vinod' has just a day left to hit the screens, the duo is busy with the promotions of the film. The two were spotted at the Phoenix Mall in Mumbai to promote the flick. The film is hogging much attention because of the romantic linkup the lead actors share off-screen. However, Saif urges his fans to abstain from this factor being their motivation behind watching the film.
"People should never come to see off screen couple on screen, they should come to see two actors on screen…they should come to see a director's film or simply to watch a movie. What is happening behind the scene is supposed to be by the way, the problem is what happens behind the scene between two people becomes important than anything else. Then people's expectations change and that overshadows everything," Saif said.
"Sriram (director) has made the film..he has not made this kind of a commercial film ever. I would say watch the movie for Siraram. I feel star cast adds something to the film, but that should not be the reason to watch the film," Saif added.
Kareena Kapoor said: "I've always said that, I think, Saif and Aamir are the best actors in Indian cinema; so it's a great opportunity to work with Saif! I mean, I have worked with him before, but what Sriram has captured in Agent Vinod, I think that was what was missing in Tashan and Kurbaan, which now our fans would get to see."
This is third film where Saif and Kareena are sharing screen space, the first two being Aditya Chopra's 'Tashan' (2008) and Karan Johar's 'Kurbaan' (2009).
