Our embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan has also helped us in making them free," Dipu Moni told reporter at the airport. "We will resume operation of our embassy in Afghanistan very soon," she added. Facebook spammer could get 40 years

SAN FRANCISCO: A Las Vegas man accused of sending more than 27 million spam messages to Facebook users faces federal fraud and computer tampering charges that could send him to prison for more than 40 years, according to a grand jury indictment. Sanford Wallace, the self- proclaimed "Spam King," pleaded not guilty. The indictment filed in San Jose federal court said Wallace compromised about 500,000 Facebook accounts between November 2008 and March 2009 by sending massive amounts of spam through the company's servers on three separate occasions. Wallace would collect Facebook user account information by sending "phishing" messages that tricked users of the social networking site into providing their passwords, the indictment said. He would then use that information to log into their accounts and post spam messages on their friends' Facebook walls, the indictment said. Those who clicked on the link, thinking it came from their friend, were redirected to websites that paid Wallace for the Internet traffic.

Eight killed in US shooting: Reports

WASHINGTON: A gunman shot and killed seven people Sunday, including an 11 year-old girl, before he was cornered by police and shot dead, local media in the US state of Ohio report. The shooting, apparently rooted in a domestic dispute, took place Sunday morning in Copley Township, a small town located outside Akron, in northeastern Ohio, local television station WKYC-TV reported. Copley Police Chief Michael Mier told a local newspaper, the Akron Beacon Journal, that five people were found shot dead outside a home and two people were killed at a separate location. After receiving calls to the 911 emergency line and rushing to the scene of the crime, police officers saw a suspect flee. The suspect then "engaged the officers in gunfire and the suspect has been killed as well," Mier told the Beacon Journal. Mier said the motive of the shootings was not known, but WKYC-TV reported that the shooting was due to a family dispute. Copley Township, located some 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Cleveland, has a population of some 14,000, according to the Township's website.

AL leaders insist on consensus

Posted: 07 Aug 2011 11:32 AM PDT

The ruling Awami League says it wants political consensus prior to electoral reforms and popular awareness before launch of electronic voting machine (EVM). "Electoral laws should be reformed through consensus," said party general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam at a meeting with the election commissioners on Sunday. "Awami League wants an election acceptable to all. We hope that the EC will give us an acceptable- to-all election next time as it did in 2008. "Our key objective is to ensure everyone's participation," he said. He said his party wanted to see the EC continue to try to get the BNP into talks. "The commission can bring everyone to the dialogue if it wants." About EVMs, Ashraf said, "People can adapt to new technologies very fast. But they need training for this." A 19-member team represented the party at the 'dialogue' with the Election Commission on Sunday. The Awami League delegation included presidium members Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Matia Chowdhury, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Obaidul Quader, advisory council members A M A Muhith, Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Rahmat Ali, Dr Alauddin and joint general secretary Mahbub-ul- Alam Hanif. Muhith spoke highly of the EVM, while Selim stressed on physical security in polling centres along with technological security. The other issues discussed at the meeting included amendments to the election laws, state funding for parties, formulation of demarcation rules and procedure of appointment of the election commissioners. Ashraf said his party would give its opinion on these issues "after further discussions by the party's policymakers". "We'll have to sit with the EC for many more times." Chief election commissioner (CEC) A T M Shamsul Huda was accompanied by the two other commissioners in the meeting at the EC conference room. EVM IN CITY CORPORATION POLLS Pointing out that the constitution authorises the commission to take any decision to improve the electoral process, the CEC said the EC decided to use EVMs to avoid complexities in polls management and administration. "We're speaking with the political parties as a matter of courtesy. None will be able to stop us if we want to do anything," he said. Huda added that EVMs would be used in local polls at Comilla and Narayanganj.
