SRK Historical Train 'Chennai Express' is a big hit in Karachi

The Rohit Shetty directorial movie eclipsed all other releases on Eid day by a big margin in Pakistan, the Dawn newspaper reported Thursday.

"Being Pakistanis, we like to promote our films. Therefore, we ran 'Ishq Khuda' for two days but it didn't attract sufficient audiences," said Aziz Khan, general manager of Capri cinema.
"On the other hand, Historical train 'Chennai Express' is doing a roaring business from the first show."

Anita Kenneth, head of marketing at Atrium Cinema, added: "From day one ...Historical train 'Chennai Express' has been sold out."

"It's a typical Rohit Shetty comedy and masala movie. Then, of course, the glamorous Deepika Padukone is in the movie."

Historical Chennai Express records will be broken and bettered in a few months: Shah Rukh Khan

Chennai Express' has broken several records, be it the fastest 100 crores at the box office in India within the first four days, the highest international opening of 51 crores, the highest preview collection of 6.18 crores amongst others. Looking at Shah Rukh Khan, you can see he is happy. Whether you are or not a friend or fan of Shah Rukh, there are three things you have to grant him — his generosity, his unabashed capacity to promote and his clarity that records are made only to be broken. Excerpts from a conversation with the extremely charming and satirical man:

What makes you India's biggest star internationally?

I have no idea. I think I just look really cool. Aristocratic world class looks.

Chennai Express has broken several records. What does that mean to you?
It's very nice, but, as far as I am concerned, none of these records matter as they will be equalled or bettered in a few months and they should be. Carl Lewis can't sit on the laurels of being the fastest runner. Usain Bolt will come and that's how it is and it should be. Anyone who keeps harping on records will get stuck in a time warp. Anyone who keeps bothering about records will not make a film from the heart and anyone who keeps desiring records will have the darkest time creating stuff.

So, I don't indulge in either of the three. The good thing is that the business of Hindi films will become bigger. With 1.2 billion people, our openings will be equal to international films. Personally, the film has done what it was meant to do. It was meant to involve maximum number of people from big or small unit families, ranging from the kids to the grandparents. Everybody is liking it. An 80-year-old lady met me yesterday and hugged me saying, 'I enjoyed the film and so did my eight-year-old grandson'. The film bonded them as they both laughed at the same things. When I get tweets from people in Mauritius to Mazgaon saying the same thing, it's really nice.

With the film crossing 100 crores (net India theatrical) in just four days, are you now targeting the 200 crore number?

If I give a number, I am limiting myself. I want as many people to see the film, be it today on Independence Day or the coming week, they should throng the theatres and see the film. People are seeing it multiple times, which today seldom happens, and I think it will turn out to be a longish running film.

While TOI rates both realistic and popular cinema based on reader tastes, some critics take themselves too seriously and have given the film as low as 2 stars. Has the success of the film defied critics' ratings?
You defy things that are important. There is no defying in story liking and story telling. You just like something. I am a filmmaker for 22 years. I loved The Hangover part 1 and hated part 2, but it did as much business. It's very subjective. People have preconceived notions. They evaluate realistic with popular and do not like to rate popular cinema well. Cinema should just be gone to and seen and you make up your mind after the film. If you tell me about a film you didn't like, but if I have to see a film, I will still see it.

Every critic has his or her right to have his or her opinion. I have never thanked a critic for giving a good rating nor have I ever questioned a critic for his opinion. I am not nice to people so that they review my film well. I am nice to them, as I am just a nice guy. I have made the film I wanted to and can tell what kind of films critics like or not like.

One unanimous thing one hears about you is your generosity. And the beauty is you never talk about it. Did you inherit it?

I have no reason to be anything else, genuinely. I have everything in the world. Some people tell me I am generous as I am scared and that is why I am always nice to people. Allah Miya said, 'If you are giving for a reason which is personal, then it is not charity. In Islam, a part of anything we earn should, in any case, be given. My mother used to tell me the story of Prophet Ali. He was breaking casks of wine because drinking is discouraged in Islam. He kept breaking casks till he reached 99, when he realised 'Kitna achcha kaam kar raha hoon' in the name of God. So that time, it had become a personal thing as he was feeling proud about it. I am extremely generous with people I deal with. Allah has given me so much because of me being like that.

My children sometimes say, 'Papa, that person was like that and you are still being so nice.' Let me tell you a Sant Kabir doha even though it may sound cliched: Jo toku kaata boye (the one who pricks you with a thorn), Tahi boye tu phool (you take a flower and prick him back), Taki phool ke phool hai (your flowers will remain flowers), Wako hai trishul (it will be like a trishul to him and he will realise his mistake)

We were poor and if you came to our house, we had a dining table on which there was just one vase, which was the only piece of adornment we had. If someone came to our house and said that it looked nice, we understood that he was saying it because that was the only thing he could compliment us for. But, before he would walk out, my father would have packed it in a newspaper and given it to him. That's how I have been brought up. If somebody tells me they like something, I give it to them. Both my parents were extremely generous. In our house you never had to ask, you just had to say. I found out later after my mother died, that there was a loan she had taken of five lakhs just so that I could have a Maruti van in college. I had not asked her for a car but had just told her that my friends came to college in a car. She bought it fully knowing that she could not afford it.

My kids don't ask for anything. I give them so much that they are fulfilled. I always take a gift for them, but they always say, 'Why papa?' You have to give enough. I know I am generous and so are both my kids. It's very strange that one of them looks like Gauri and one like me, but their nature is just like me. They both have a sense of humour. They both read, have anecdotes and stories to tell and are giving in nature.

Is Gauri serious?

She is actually a joker and is really funny.

After so many years of marriage what do Gauri and you like the most about each other?
The space we give each other. We have never had an issue of why are you doing this, have dinner now, spend time with the kids. There is no binding. We have known each other too long and have a tacit understanding in our relationship. The kids really bind us and we both have a great time with them.We have a great sense of entertainment in our kids. Don't know how they will turn up when they grow up, but at this point they are an interesting set of toys.

You are considered a generous producer. You don't have a problem putting in your own money. Is that true?
I do put in my money. If I remember my last film RA.One has not paid me. I put my fees into the film. I give my blood and sweat for a film. It's easier for me to make money doing opening ceremonies of people's shops and programmes. If I decide to, I can make money in 30 days than what I can make in 10 films as an actor.

What are people liking about Chennai Express?

This film is a little different from a Rohit Shetty film, and a little different from me and it's the little difference that has made all the difference. '66 years of independence and you can't be considered independent till your women have a say in life.' To me that is the most important thing in the film. Gauri's dad saw it and said, 'Mujhe jo achcha lagta hai yaar woh yeh hai ki acchi achchi batein ho rahi hai, haste bhi ja rahe hai log and aap achchi batein bhi kar rahe ho.' People are enjoying that and it has a universal appeal.

Who did you share your excitement with first of the big opening? An award has never been a vindication for me. I have 14 Filmfare awards. Every award I would alternate and put it in Suhana or Aryan's bedroom. When they would wake up, they knew whose turn it was and for them, it just meant that their papa is doing well. On Saturday, both my kids came to wake me up and by that time, there were lots of messages on the phone about the opening, so I shared my happiness with them.

You have redefined how a film is promoted?

If you are proud of something, you should talk about it. Most importantly, promotion is for informing people and is not just about being seen. It's for informing people about your product, as it will improve the chances of them seeing it. I have nothing else to do. This film, for my company Red Chillies, is very important. It's a huge film and you get such chances once in 10 years. My friends' production houses have had big films be DDLJ or Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. For Red Chillies, it was Om Shanti Om and now Chennai Express. The film will make big monies for the company and will help them run other businesses they have and help them take up exciting stuff in the future. times of india

Emraan Hashmi missed to kiss Kareena.

Bollywood sexy Kareena Kapoor has followed a bold approach when it comes to her films. Be it kissing, getting intimate onscreen or wearing a bikini she has done it all with ease.

But recent reports suggest that she has refused to lock lips with serial kisser of B-town Emraan Hashmi in their upcoming film Badtameez Dil.

The film, produced by Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Motion Pictures and Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, is slated go on the floors this September.

We all know, Emraan and his famous kissing sequences walk hand in hand and he was reportedly keen that his new film includes an intimate kissing scene.
But his request was denied by the producer Ekta Kapoor as Bebo had reservations kissing onscreen.

Though Kareena has kissed Shahid Kapoor in the past and has also got intimate with Ajay Devgn for their film Satyagraha, she reportedly told the producers that she will not kiss on screen.

From bikinis, bras, and tube tops, Poonam Pandey has now graduated to an entirely unexpected look: that of a village girl but without her choli.

Well, this is apparently the look of the Nasha hottie in her second film, to be directed by Ajit Rajpal, the man who wrote Nasha. In the flick, Poonam Pandey will be seen as a village girl who even smokes beedis.

Now, the question Poonam Pandey's fans must be itching to ask: will she strip in the movie?

The answer to that is a NO. Poonam Pandey has made it clear that she's going to tone down on her strip acts in the future. So, she will don a saree in the film.

"I will be draping the saree in a completely new style. It would be as innovative as Saira Banuji's look in that old film Shagird. And no more skin show for me," Poonam Pandey is quoted as saying.

That's my main thing."

Shahrukh Khan Chennai Express' creates Box office history, mints Rs. 100 crore in opening weekend

Yes, you read it right. Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone's movie Chennai Express has shattered all previous box office records and CREATED HISTORY by minting Rs. 100 crore in its opening weekend.

The trade pundits are busy writing a new tally of box office records, thanks to director Rohit Shetty's roaring Eid hit, Chennai Express that has shattered five records in four days. Five in four! How?

Here's how. On Thursday evening the film smashed the record of highest collection from paid previews (Rs. 6.75 crore net). On Friday, the Eid holiday, the film registered the highest opening day collection (Rs. 33.12 crore net, thereby breaking the Ek Tha Tiger record). The record breaking spree continued on Saturday and Sunday with the highest second and third day collections ever for a Bollywood film with figures of Rs. 28.05 crore net and Rs. 32.50 crore net, respectively.

Review: Sex scandal determination is redundant Shahrukh Khan

That's four records. The fifth one being the highest opening weekend collection ever by a Bollywood film. With Rs. 100.42 crore net in just three days (excluding previews), the film has created box office history and a new record that would be difficult to break.

At this pace, Shahrukh Khan's Chennai Express could chug past even 3 Idiots as the highest all-time grosser. ApunKaChoice will keep you posted.

Kissing tips by experts!
Health benefits of Kissing tips by experts

Over its 100 years of existence, Indian cinema has thrown up various lip-lock scenes – from Devika Rani to Rani Mukerji; from Himanshu Rai to serial kisser Emraan Hashmi, and now the small screen is not far behind either. But looking at making your own experience special? Here's how! Kissing is an art and experts say you must follow some rules. Firstly, lovers should be careful about hygiene, says Shikha Giri, consultant prosthodontist and implantologist.

'Brushing your teeth is very important. One should do it after dinner and after breakfast. In the morning, you should just massage your gums with your fingers and should brush your teeth after breakfast, this will control germ buildup,' Giri told IANS. If reports are to be believed, Hollywood actress Julia Roberts' fetish for peanut butter sandwiches left her with bad breath, making it difficult to shoot love scenes with co-star Clive Owen in 'Duplicity'. So, she used to freshen up before filming the intimate scenes.

For those aware of their bad breath, dental expert Rachana Doshi suggests the use of a mouthwash as it gives 'a fresh breath every time you use it and also causes less germ buildup'. It could be a French kiss or a woodpecker kiss; so another important tip is to ensure your lips aren't dry. Moisten them. Of course, hygiene goes a long way in enhancing the lip-locking experience, but it goes much beyond that, feels Harsh Mahajan, a student, as his romantic moment went awry because his girlfriend was not ready for it.

'Me and my girl had just started dating and to have some private time, we went to Manali. It started raining, we were a little wet and I thought it would be romantic to have our first kiss there. When I tried to lean over to kiss her, she chickened out as she was not prepared,' Mahajan explained to IANS without any self-consciousness.

What can lovers do to avoid a kissing fiasco?

Don't bite your partner's lips, says Faraaz Kazi, author of romantic novel 'Truly Madly Deeply', and, to relish the moment, avoid keeping your eyes open. 'Don't lose the nose contact. Don't force yourself on your partner and don't get to the crux of the moment immediately,' he said on kissing techniques.  After getting the basics right, lovers can make it better by forgetting apprehensions. 'I believe that the company matters, the place doesn't. So the company can make any place better,' said Kazi.

And then, just follow your heart – or maybe your screen idol! 'Just follow your heart and go with the flow. By going with the flow, I mean just close your eyes, tilt your head and you will be there,' added Kazi. So when everything is in place, just close your eyes and feel the moment!

Who will be the ultimate winner in'Ek Tha Tiger' vs ' Chennai Express'?

Who will be the ultimate winner in'Ek Tha Tiger' vs ' Chennai Express'?
Sharuk Khan and Deepika Padukonein Chennai Express
The numbers are not yet all in, but it looks very much like Chennai Express, the Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer is well on its way to breaking every collection record.

In the Bollywood world, where revenue is largely broken up into opening weekend collections, both in India and abroad, satellite rights and advertising and sponsorship rights, Chennai Express according to reports has already earned Rs 48 crore. Opening day collections were at Rs 33.12 crore pipping, Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger which had earned Rs 32.92 crore.

So far running to full theatres, the film has also earned close to Rs 7 crore in paid previews. Prakhar Joshi, of PVR Cinemas told Hindustan Times "Now CE holds the record of biggest opening day at PVR – if you add previews, this number becomes even bigger. We were always confident of film doing well thus backed it with maximum show caning (sic) and right ticket pricing."

According to Business Standard the Disney UTV produced film has also done extremely well in foreign markets, where the preview collections were at Rs 7.8 crore.
"We've received an overwhelming response from all quarters and the film is being loved by everyone," Gaurav Verma, director – India theatrical distribution, Studios, Disney UTV told IANS.

"Though 'Chennai Express' is playing in highest number of screens for any film, we still ran out of capacity in most locations due to this huge demand at the box office and the film is on its way to create new benchmarks," added Verma.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared that the collective figures minted by the movie on Thursday and Friday in India amounted to Rs. 39.87 crore nett.

Said to have been made at a budget of Rs. 70 crore, "Chennai Express" had a grand release in over 3,500 screens in the country and 700 screens abroad.

The advance bookings for the film were strong, said Girish Wankhede of Cinemax chain.

"It's doing very well. On Thursday, there were 80 to 90 percent occupancy of seats. Advance booking was strong for this weekend. It will do very well in coming weeks also," Wankhede told IANS.

Down south also, the movie has received a good response.

Trade analyst Trinath shared: "This is probably the best ever opening for a SRK film in the state. Even though people voiced about the stereotyping in 'Chennai Express', none had any issues with it and embraced it with a smile."

In the film, Shah Rukh plays a north Indian, who falls in love with a Tamil girl, essayed by his "Om Shanti Om" co-star Deepika.

The number of shows were doubled in Chennai for "Chennai Express" as Tamil movie "Thalaivaa" didn't release there.

"Since 'Thalaivaa' didn't release, the number of shows for 'Chennai Express' were doubled (on Friday). We had about 95 percent occupancy for the paid previews and most shows over the weekend are booked," a multiplex representative in Chennai, said.

Mumbai-based trade analyst Komal Nahta didn't find the film as entertaining as Shetty's previous films like the "Golmaal" series, but he didn't deny that the movie indeed got a "fantastic start" in India.

Internationally too, the film is said to be doing well.

In the Gulf region, it released Thursday and minted $435,000, with 28 screens yet to report. But it is estimated to cross $550,000 by the time all screens report, said a source.

In Singapore, two screens are yet to report, but it made $95,359 on Thursday.

"Chennai Express", an action comedy, had only night show previews in Britain Thursday, numbers are 142,220 pounds with three sites yet to report.

In Australia, the paid previews Thursday amounted to $34,314, while in New Zealand, the figures came to $6,431.

Adarsh shared on Twitter that the movie took a "huge start in US-Canada", earning $2,60,000 (Rs.15, 776,020.00 approximately) out of Thursday night preview shows.

Officials at UTV Motion Pictures, which has co-produced the potboiler with Shah Rukh's Red Chillies Entertainment, are happy.

"'Chennai' Express has taken the box office by storm in international markets. The movie is setting new opening day and paid previews records and benchmarks for Hindi movies in most countries," Amrita Pandey, executive director, International Distribution, Syndication and Disney Media Distribution, Studios, Disney UTV, said in a statement.

"In many cinema chains we've added shows and the movie was moved to additional screens and to highest capacity screens. This has been a massive opening to a huge release," she added.

As we speak #RecordExpress is one of the top trends on Twitter India.
