Buddhadeb Dasgupta: Nandita Das Wanted Me To Adapt Tagore Onscreen Posted: 10 Dec 2010 12:22 AM PST
Bengali film director and author Buddhadeb Dasgupta will soon be making his third Hindi feature film and this time he has chosen a Rabindranath Tagore work for the big screen. According to reports circulating in the media, Buddhadeb Dasgupta will adapt Rabindranath Tagore's 'Sey', which is to be named 'Woh' in Hindi. In a statement to the media, the filmmaker says that actress Nandita Das is his inspiration behind choosing 'Sey' for the big screen. Though not literally, but it was the talented actress who had first suggested the master director to adapt a Tagore work to mark the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of the litterateur. And since it was a children's film that Nandita Das had wanted him to do, Buddhadeb Dasgupta first rounded up on 'Dakghar' as his third Hindi project. As an afterthought, Buddhadeb Dasgupta considered that 'Dakghar' had already been adapted for the big screen and hence comparisons will evidently crop up. Therefore it was 'Sey' for the National Award winning filmmaker. 'Sey' narrates a conversation between a grandfather and his grandchild and the stories that he narrates to the child about a fictitious character. While Barun Chanda is Buddhadeb Dasgupta's grandfather, Aratrika Ghosh playsthe child and Ashok Shivpuri playsSey, the fictional character of thegrandfather. Buddhadeb Dasgupta has worked in earlier Hindi films like Andhi Gali and Bagh Bahadur . |
Documenting the history of Asian cinema Posted: 10 Dec 2010 12:21 AM PST
New Delhi, Dec 10 - The semanticsof Asian cinema has got a new archive - a comprehensive anthology 'Asian Film Journey: Selections From Cinemaya' that has compiled 93 best articles published in the capital's erstwhilemouthpiece of serious cinema between 1998 and 2004. 'Cinemaya: The Asian Film Quarterly', which was born in 1988 as a platform to voice the concerns and achievement of Asian cinema, closed down in 2004. This was a few years after its founder Aruna Vasudev relinquished reins of the Cinemayato the Mumbai-based arts promotion umbrella, OSIAN's, along with her signature film festival - Cinefan. However, the magazine gave to the country, NETPAC, the Asian cinema network that Vasudev hasbeen managing for the last 20 years. The anthology, published by Wisdom Tree and edited by RashmiDoraiswamy and Latika Padgaonkar, was unveiled at the Delhi International Arts Festival in the capital Thursday. The compendium pivots on the core issue of what exactly constitutes Asian Cinema - what sets it apart from the genres in other continents, its narrative and progression over the years to evolve a distinct voice that is essentially rooted in the land's diverse culture, histories and indigeneity. What is Asian cinema? According to co-editor of the anthology Latika Padgaonkar, 'For the past 15 years, films from Asia have figured regularly on the awards list of international festivals. But awards only tell a part of the story.' 'Behind them lies a host of creative talent involved in shapinga nation's sensibility, conveying anemotion or denoting a concern special to its culture and life.' Padgaonkar told IANS that in Asia, authors who assert their own style and individuality 'have had to contend with very real question of history, culture, aesthetics and questions thrown up by the struggle of the ancientcivilisations as they come to terms with modernity'. This is where Asian cinema offers its own world view in which the individual may not necessarily be the central figure, but rather a large part of the family, community or social fabric, she says. The book presents a contrast of opinions about the Asian cinema as a genre. 'When you think of Asia you think of unexplored markets - you think of a region which has its share of the world's turmoil - andthen you think of its cinema whichmirrors both these elements. In the last decade, Asian cinema has moved into Hollywood,' film writer Philip Cheah observes. 'Hollywood has also been quick to shift to Asia, largely through its multiplex operations. While most critics have hailed the new blending of art and entertainment, most notably in the glorious Indian megahits, it somehow still hides the fact that the real face of Asian cinema is tucked away in its margins,' he adds. But film critic and writer Chris Berry differs. 'If the idea of Asia is a European invention, it follows that Asian cinema is an equally fictional device. There is no single Asian cinema or culture. We also need to be aware that using Asian cinema tag in the case of film festivals outside Asia itself runs the risk of ghettoisation,' he says. But within Asia, if the tag Asian cinema helps build links among theotherwise different neighbouring countries and cultures, it may be important in terms of cinematic aesthetics, film industry cooperation and in forging larger cultural links, Perry says. Writer Bernice Beynaud poses a query : Does the western gaze define what is Asian? 'When I was on the selection committee of the Asian CineVision Festival in New York, we debated whether Turkish or Egyptian films could be considered Asian becausewe liked them and wanted to show them?,' Beynaud recalls. 'Asianness' in cinema depends on conditions of distribution, exhibition, production, viewership and critical discourse in an international arena shaped by a 'dialectical relationship of power, dominance and reciprocal interaction between the native and the western gaze, he says. Rashmi Doraiswamy, who co-edited the book with Padgaonkar, says 'cinema in the Asian countries developed in the way it told stories' and through popular performance cultures. Cinemaya founder Aruna Vasudev no longer wants to look on the years. 'I don't want to revive it. The NETPAC has been growing, but we would like to do somethingon the Internet,' Vasudev says. Publisher Shobit Arya of Wisdom Tree says 'it was a significant documentation of Asian cinema's history'. 'Not much has been written aboutAsian cinema. The concept of Asiancinema is complex and dynamic. How would one define Asian cinema,' Arya adds. IANS |

Mirch Movie Review Posted: 09 Dec 2010 09:26 AM PST
Movie: Mirch; Director: Vinay Shukla; Cast: Konkona Sen Sharma, Raima Sen, Boman Irani, Shreyas Talpade, Rajpal Yadav, Shahana Goswami, Arunoday Singh; Watch The Modern Woman Taking Charge Of Her Own Sex Life. A small budget but meaningful cinema from the hands of Vinay Shukla, Mirch is clearly a thought provoking film which deals with contemporary issues such as a woman's sexuality and gender equality in our country. Bollywoodis no longer under pressure to play coy and that is clearly highlighted in the characters of Mirch , the girls shedding all inhibitions when it comes to baring all for the movie camera. The story of Mirch introduces us to a guy named Manav who is prepared to do anything to secure a place in the film world asa successful filmmaker. However, when his initial scripts get rejected by a producer, he takes the help from the Panchatantra series to write down his own adaptation of the story of a girl who comes out unscathed even after her husband catches her red handed in bed with another man. While there are complains about the length of his film being short, Manav makes four modern stories inspired from the Panchatantra, all based on the subject of adultery and highly erotic in content. As Manav's storyline suggests, hisactors will now have to shed all to enact their part in the film within a film. Mirch is thus a combination of four stories. The stories are thematically linked to one another but speak about four different sets of lives. Viewers are eagerly waiting to watch Vinay Shukla's interpretation of the women who have a mind when it comes to sex. It is download able in www.nilganj.com -- Sampurn Wire |

ICC World cup Tickets on sale in bangladesh from Jan 1 Posted: 09 Dec 2010 08:51 AM PST
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officially announced yesterday that tickets for next year's ICC World Cup in Bangladesh will go on sale from January 1, 2011 at designated outlets across the country. The decision was taken during a Local Organising Committee (LOC) meeting on Tuesday night but the board has yet to finalize the specific details of where and how, despite taking more than a month to fix a final date. With the showcase event knocking at the door, the fans are increasingly curious about tickets. The common query is not just about when the tickets will go on sale, but how many tickets will be available for general sale, where they will be available from and how the tickets can be purchased. So far, frustratingly for many, the BCB has provided concrete answers to only one of those queries. "We have decided only on the selling date but I can assure you that everything will be finalized before January 1," said BCB's chief executive officer Manzur Ahmed. It was however learned that some BCB officials are unhappy with the delay in disseminating information about tickets. Many expressed their surprise that the local organizing committee is yet to finalize the details for such a burning issue. "Surprisingly the LOC itself has no idea about the details and they called a meeting without any detailed plan. We can't understand why they are dilly- dallying when the fans are desperately looking for detailed information," a BCB official said on condition of anonymity. "We are yet to decide about the details but hopefully we can fix everything within the next two or three days. What I can say is that tickets will be available at an ICC sponsor outlet or bank in all 64 districts. But there might be up to five or six outlets or banks designated to sell tickets in Dhaka," said Ali Ahsan Babu, host tournament director. He also added that the tickets for the opening ceremony will go on sale on the same day. Babu however could not confirm whether there is any chance for the fans to purchase tickets online but he did confirm that one person will be eligible to buy a maximum of four tickets for matches. Babu did not have a definitive answer on how many tickets would be available altogether for the general public. However, it is envisioned that fans will have to be quick to wrap up their tickets as the local organising committee (LOC) will set apart a significant number of tickets for distribution among the ICC and local dignitaries. The LOC also want to make a payback to the local high-ups who are helping them prepare for the showcase event. As the capacity of the Sher-e- Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur is a little more than 24,000 it is a reasonable estimation that about 16,000 to 17,000 tickets will be available for general fans for each match. The number will be proportionately lower for the 16000-capacity Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong. However, for the opening ceremony in the 25000-capacity Bangabandhu National Stadium, most of the tickets will be reserved for the invitees. Five per cent of the match tickets have already been committed to online sales from June 1 through the World Cup central organising committee. The respective boards of the three co-hosts -- Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka -- will sell the rest of the tickets. Bangladesh will host eight matches in Dhaka and Chittagong including two quarterfinals besides the opening ceremony, which will be held on February 17 next year. Besides the opening match against India to be held on February 19, Bangladesh will take on Ireland on February 25 in Dhaka, West Indies on March 4 in Dhaka, England on March 11 in Chittagong and Netherlands on March 14 in Chittagong. The two quarterfinals will take place at Dhaka on March 23 and March 25. BCB has already fixed the rates for the galleries. TICKET RATES Eastern Gallery (Category D) USD 3.00 (est. TK 210) North Gallery (Category C) USD 6.00 (est. Tk 420) South Gallery (Category C) USD 6.00 (est. Tk 420) Club House (North-South) USD 10.00 (est. Tk 700) International Gallery (North- South, Category A) USD 30.00 (est. Tk 2100) |
