Bangladesh v India, World Cup 2011: Tamim lays into India's attack

Posted: 19 Feb 2011 02:29 AM PST

Toss Bangladesh chose to bowl v India A massive roar reverberated round the Shere Bangla Stadium as Shakib Al Hasan won the first toss of Bangladesh's World Cup campaign and put India in, mindful of the effect the dew could have later in the evening in Mirpur. Shakib emphasised that this was a proud moment for team and country and said that he would be happy chasing anything less than 260. Bangladesh left out Mohammad Ashraful from their XI, choosing to play Raqibul Hasan instead, and also fielded two allrounders and two specialist fast bowlers.

Team India seeks revenge for 2007 World Cup debacle

Posted: 18 Feb 2011 09:00 PM PST

MIRPUR: It's not about having the best team. It is not about revenge either. When India and Bangladesh square off on Saturday at the Shere-e-Bangla National Stadium here, it will all be about handling pressure. There is so much hype surrounding the inaugural match of the 2011 World Cup that even a seasoned campaigner like Mahendra Singh Dhoni is feeling the heat, while his Bangladesh counterpart Shakib Al Hasan is reeling under it. While Dhoni tried to deflect pressure by playing to the gallery at Friday's match-eve press conference, Shakib literally sweated it out even as he fielded uncomfortable questions, including a few on the injured Mashrafe Mortaza's absence. Shakib, in all seriousness, maintained that his side would miss the experienced allrounder, who was Man of the Match on the last two occasions when Bangladesh beat India, but expected others to do the job. Dhoni, on the other hand, simply pointed out - amid peals of laughter - that "being out of the squad means Mortaza wouldn't be able to pick up the award this time." It was clearly Dhoni's way of dealing with the pressures of World Cup that his team is hotly tipped to win. The match-up against Bangladesh represents the first hurdle in what promises to be a fascinating campaign. History counts for little in instant cricket, and the loss to Bangladesh in the 2007 World Cup has been reduced to a footnote by tall achievements by the current crop of players whom Dhoni has galvanized into world-beaters. It's redemption, rather than revenge, that India would be seeking through a winning start on Saturday. Even lightning never strikes twice at the same place. To expect Bangladesh to do so against India will be expecting too much from Shakib's youthful side which clearly lacks depth. Purely from a cricketing point of view, Bangladesh are over- reliant on their left-handed opener Tamim Iqbal to post a match-winning total, while their bowling attack lacks both variety as well as depth. Their two pacers - Shaiful Islam and Rubel Hossain - are both right- arm operators, while their three frontline spinners Shakib, Razzak and Sohrawordi Suvho are all of left-arm variety. Unless they make early inroads and keep picking wickets at regular intervals, it is hard to see them containing a powerful Indian line-up that boasts some of the biggest hitters in the game. It is good for any captain to have a problem of plenty, but spare a thought for Dhoni, who must now make up his mind about Yuvraj Singh. Picked on his reputation as a match-winning batsman, Yuvi continues to struggle with the bat but has emerged as a frontline spinner, who regularly bowls his full quota of overs. The first XI picks itself with Sachin, Sehwag, Gambhir and Kohli taking up the top four slots and Yuvraj, Dhoni and Pathan coming in next, followed by Harbhajan, Zaheer, Chawla and Munaf. Nehra could pip Munaf to the second pacer's berth. But Dhoni must be relieved to see Zaheer back in the bowling nets here after missing the warm-up games. Yuvi's new-found confidence in bowling gives Dhoni a chance to include a frontline batsman instead of allrounder Pathan, whose hard-hitting skills may not be needed against Bangladesh. Dhoni has also not used Pathan's off-spin much in the two warm- up matches against Australia and New Zealand. Raina could be a direct beneficiary as he is a good player of spin and would relish batting against the left-arm tweakers of Bangladesh. The bald, brown pitch will have nothing to offer to the pacers. It is expected to play low and slow which means taking the pace off the ball would pay for the bowlers, while batsmen need to play the waiting game. It may not be a walk in park for India, but a battle of attrition, where Dhoni's bravehearts must overcome the pressure of expectations before slaying the Bangla Tigers in their den.

Goa tourism raises concern over ‘ Dum Maro Dum’ content

Posted: 18 Feb 2011 08:56 PM PST

Panaji, Feb 18 - Two months before its release, Rohan Sippy's "Dum Maro Dum" has rattled Goa's tourism industry as initial reports about the Abhishek Bachchan-starrer suggest that the movie delves a lot into the state's narcotics mafia and sex trade. Both the contentious issues have put Goa on the international map of infamy and with "Dum Maro Dum" only set to reinforce the same negative image, the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) is simply not happy. "The censor board should have cut out the objectionable parts, if it portrays the state in a bad light," Gaurish Dhond, president of the TTAG, told reporters here Friday. Comprising of stakeholders of the travel and tourism industry in Goa, the TTAG for nearly three decades now has been the voice of the trade here. "The film could have bad repercussion for tourism in Goa, if it throws up scenes of prostitution and drugs," Dhond said. Set in Goa, the film sees Abishek as a police officer and also stars Deepika Padukone and Bipasha Basu. The first look of the Fox Star-produced movie has all the nefarious ingredients, which has put the state under negative spotlight in the recent past. In bold big-sized letters, 'Drugs', 'Cocaine', 'Sex' and 'Ecstasy' run through the racy promo, which also shows rave party scenes and sexy bikini-clad foreigners. "British (teenager) Scarlet Keeling's death case was hyped so much that people started feeling that our beaches are unsafe, which was not true at all in the first case. And now this," Dhond said. Known for its beaches, Goa annually attracts 2.4 million tourists, nearly half a million of whom hail from European countries. Accusing the media and filmmakers of going overboard while portraying Goa as a sex destination, Dhond said the reputation of Goa is at stake. "Goa has been built as a tourist destination over the years. You cannot allow some film to condemn it overnight. We have worked very hard for this brand. Why is Goa only being projected in a bad light? Drug abuse, rapes are being highlighted in a big way like this, which spoils the reputation of the state," he said. "Dum Maro Dum" is set for an April 22 release. Superintendent of Police Atmaram Deshpande said they have not written to the producers of the film seeking a pre-release screening. "We have not issued any letter to the producers of the film," said Deshpande, a spokesperson of the Goa police.

Priyanka Chopra, Shahid Kapoor Face Off

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 10:57 PM PST

It seems this Valentine' s Day was different for the most hot and happening Bollywood couple of Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. They spent the day away from each other and didn' t even spoke over the phone to each other. It is strange behaviour for a couple madly in love. The spat started from a very small issue. It is understood from their common friends that the couple started arguing from the trivial issue of selecting a menu at a restaurant. However, the relation between the couple was under considerable stress for the past few days for completely different reasons, which manifested as the quarrel over selecting the menu. Piggy chops nowadays is ultra busy with her shooting for the movie "Don2", this considerably reduced the meeting time of the love birds. Also Priyanka Chopra is in the final stages of signing a film which includes the womanizer Ranbir kapoor. Shahid is not happy with the decisions of her girl friend. We sincerely hope that the couple rises above their differences and patches up their relation. This petty issues can be easily resolved if they are truly in love with each other. It will be really sad to see this beautiful couple separate and take their different paths.

A big ticket to Bollywood for Bhopal locals

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 10:55 PM PST

Bhopal, Feb 18 - Three assistant directors and more than 65 supporting artists are among the many Bhopal locals who have got a golden opportunity to be part of Bollywood, thanks to Prakash Jha's 'Aarakshan'. Some are just happy to feature in the crowds in film scenes. The film is helping budding talent from the city find a foothold in showbiz, says Zohaib Ali who has been hired as an assistant director to work on 'Aarakshan', which stars Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Manoj Bajpai. 'Prakash Jha has kept his promise. After the shooting of 'Raajneeti' here, he had said that in his next movie he will give a chance to people from Bhopal,' Zohaib, 23, told IANS. 'The chance to work as an assistant director with Prakash Jha is the turning point of my career. He knows almost everything needed to make a film - from direction of photography (DOP), to production, screenplay to controlling huge crowds while doing it all.' For several scenes of 'Aarakshan', Jha shot with a crowd of 2,000 people along with other the stars of the film that deals with reservations for certain sections of society and its impact on society. Apart from capturing the city as a perfect backdrop for his story, the director has also involved locals for various things. There are 11 directors assisting Jha in 'Aarakshan' and three of them are from the city of lakes. In every film, there are three categories of characters - primary, secondary and those who are secondary to the secondary characters. 'Other than the directors, there are about 65 locals involved in the film. They are playing secondary and secondary to secondary characters,' said Zohaib. The production team has put up three major sets at Minal Residency, Oriental College and Rizwan Bagh. The makers plan to shoot the entire film here in 58 days and the cast and crew have been on the job since Jan 21. Zohaib says both Jha and Amitabh Bachchan, who is playing pivotal role in 'Aarakshan', are an 'institution' in themselves. 'Amitabh is a professional to watch. One day he was shooting in the rain and even at this age he did it for two hours without going to his vanity room. I observe them so that I could learn a little bit from their work,' said Zohaib. In fact, Zohaib played a small role in Jha's dark political thriller 'Raajneeti' - he was part of the group that was with Arjun Rampal in the film. Before the shooting of 'Aarakshan', Zohaib's father Zulfiqar Ali, a ghazal singer and composer, met Jha and told him about his son's wish to become a director, and the seasoned filmmaker immediately hired him. 'I have done an acting course from The Rising Society of Actor Lab (Bhopal) and I have learnt acting from Chandrahas Tiwari,' said Zohaib. He also praised the other cast members - Saif, Deepika and Manoj - and said, 'the best thing is all are cooperative and good- natured, helping us learn from them. 'All of them are enjoying working in Bhopal, especially Manoj Bajpai who likes Bhopal's food - from biryani to tikka - very much.'

'Acting unko viraasat mein mili hai (Acting is in his genes). He is very good at what he does. It didn't feel like this was his first film. We hung out a lot. I guess we connected. Priyadarshan to work with Aamir on sexi film AIDS

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 03:04 AM PST

Mumbai, Feb 15 - Priyadarshan has worked with Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. The prolific director is now set to work with the third Khan - Aamir - and it will be a film on AIDS. 'I met Aamir and narrated my idea. He loved it. I now need to complete the script,' said Priyadarshan. The film on AIDS will have no songs, no comedy and no commercial trappings at all and it is likely to be produced by Aamir himself. Priyadarshan's other Hindi film 'Tezz' is on hold and the filmmaker is more than happy to go back to his roots in Kerala and start a venture with his favourite actor Mohanlal. 'So for now I'm back in Kerala writing a Malayalam film. It's a comedy with my favourite actor Mohanlal called 'The Arab Camel & Madhavan Nair' to be shot in Abu Dhabi,' Priyadarshan said. He chose Abu Dhabi as it has a large Malayalee population. 'Even the traffic cops and taxi drivers in Abu Dhabi speak Malayalam...I haven't directed a Malayalam film in seven years so I'm very excited,' he added. The comedy will also be made in Hindi. 'I haven't gone to Mumbai for three months.I was getting very uncomfortable with what was required of me in Mumbai. Now I'll return only to complete 'Tezz' and to direct the AIDS film with Aamir Khan,' Priyadarshan said. So what happened to 'Tezz', the large-budget action thriller featuring Ajay Devgn, Anil Kapoor, Sunil Shetty, Kangna Ranaut, Tusshar Kapoor and Zayed Khan? The film is waiting for the sun to shine on its fate...quite literally. The makers are waiting for the sun to come out in Scotland where the rest of the film is to be shot. Explained Priyadarshan: 'About 40 percent of the film remains to be shot. I will complete it in one stretch in Scotland. But we cannot shoot it before summer when the sun comes out. I hope to complete and release 'Tezz' by year-end.' The only comedy that the filmmaker is committed to doing is the sequel to 'Malaamal Weekly' for Percept Pictures. Entitled 'Malaamal Robbery', it will be about a group of people robbing a bank only to discover it has no money. 'But no more comedies like 'De Dana Dan' for me,' Priyadarshan added. IANS

Lady Gaga looks like Madonna with sculpted bustier, high blond ponytail

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 02:58 AM PST

New York, Feb 15 - 'Poker Face' singer Lady Gaga was seen looking like a replica of Madonna from the 1990s with her sculpted bustier and high blond ponytail while at the 2011 Grammy Awards. Gaga, 24, took to the stage to collect her statuette for Best Pop Vocal Album for 'The Fame Monster' in a black leather bustier with a sculpted breastplate, and she also wore her hair in a long, blonde ponytail, the New York Daily News reported. In 1990, Madonna introduced the Jean Paul Gaultier's cone bra and leotard, in both gold and black, on her smash Blonde Ambition tour. She also wore the now-iconic lingerie in her music videos for 'Vogue'. But it seems Gaga's dressing sense is not the only thing being compared, as critics have noted that the hotly anticipated single from her new album 'Born This Way' sounds a lot like Madonna's 1989 smash dance hit 'Express Yourself'. Almost half of couples actually break up on Valentine’ s Day

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 04:44 AM PST

Melbourne, Feb 14 - A survey has found that Valentine's Day, which is touted as a day of love, is being used by almost half of young people in Australia for breaking up. A Galaxy Research survey of more than 1200 people aged 18-39 has found 47 percent have chosen to end it with their partner on or around Valentine's Day after taking stock of their relationship. Commissioned by big-four bank NAB the relationships survey found most young Australians, 57 percent, did not like the day nor did they want to celebrate it as the most romantic of the year. Almost half - 44 percent - of respondents said Valentine's Day was a cynical marketing exercise designed to make couples shower each other with flowers, chocolates or underwear, while one-in- four singles saw it as a day of dread and a time to feel bad about themselves. The survey has been launched as part of a cheeky anti-Valentine's Day campaign spear-headed by social commentator and author Zoe Foster to encourage people to evaluate their relationships, including with their banks. Foster, who co-wrote 'Textbook Romance' with radio funny man Hamish Blake, said that while for some couples Valentine's Day could be filled with happiness it was also a time when couples assess their relationship and looked at options. Between New Year and February 14 is a time when many evaluate whether their relationships are right for them," the Daily Telegraph quoted Foster as saying. "Almost half of young people will actually break up with their partner around Valentine's Day - it's almost what you could consider 'break-up season'," she said. The survey found that as many as one-in-three unmarried couples used February 14 to consider their relationship while one- in-four, 25 percent, admitted to staying in a relationship over Valentine's Day even though the relationship had lost its spark. "Trust, respect and honesty are all of incredible importance," Foster said. "So, if your partner has cheated, or you're feeling it's run its course, or you just don't bring out the best in each other, perhaps it's time to move on," she added. (ANI)
