Bomb blasts kill at least 8 in Mumbai Posted: 13 Jul 2011 12:02 PM PDT
Three explosions rocked crowded places in India's financial capital of Mumbai during rush hour on Wednesday, killing at least eight people, media said, in the biggest attack on the city since 2008 assaults blamed on Pakistan-based militants. At least 100 people were wounded in the near- simultaneous blasts, the home secretary said. Police earlier said at least three people had died. One blast occurred at the Opera House, a tourist destination in south Mumbai near where Pakistani-based militants carried out the bloody rampage in 2008, killing 166 people. Another blast, also in south Mumbai, was at the Zaveri Bazaar, the coastal city's diamond hub. The third blast was in the centre of the city. CNN-IBN said police had told the broadcaster the blasts were caused by improvised explosive devices. All three locations are crowded parts of the city, especially during rush hour. India has remained jittery about the threat of militant strikes, especially since the Mumbai attacks in November 2008 which killed 166 people and raised tensions with arch rival Pakistan. The Pakistan-based Lashkar-e- Taiba group, long focused on fighting Indian rule in Kashmir, was blamed for the coordinated attacks. Television footage from CNN-IBN television channel showed debris of twisted metal, motorbikes and cars severely damaged at one suspected blast site. "We were inside our office when we heard a huge noise. Outside there was a lot of commotion, we can see fire trucks are here and they have taken away two or three bodies," Jasraj Jain, a witness, told CNN-IBN television. "I want the government to take immediate steps to investigate who were behind this," said Manohar Joshi, leader of Mumbai-based Shiv Sena political party, at one of the blast sites. A reporter near the Opera House said police had cordoned off the blast site and sent in sniffer dogs to examine the area. Ambulances and fire fighters stood by. New Delhi says Pakistan-based groups aid and train militants to carry out attacks against India, a claim Islamabad rejects. Home-grown militant groups are also active in the country and have in the past few years carried out attacks in large cities. The home ministry ordered security heightened across the country. Mumabi has over the years been the target of several attacks, including serial bomb blasts in 1993 that killed at least 260 people at the stock exchange and other areas. In 2006, more than 180 people died when Islamist militants bombed commuter trains. —- Reuters |
BNP observes 8-hr hunger strike in bangladesh Posted: 13 Jul 2011 12:01 PM PDT
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday asked the state intelligence agencies not to commit excesses to remain subservient to ruling Awami League. The opposition leader issued the warning at a time when her party is trying to intensify campaign against the government by forging a stronger alliance with like-minded political parties. "You have already crossed the limit. Work to protect the country's independence and sovereignty or else you have to face dire consequences," Khaleda told a gathering after an eight-hour mass hunger strike in the city. BNP observed the hunger strike on the premises of Engineers Institute to protest police assault on opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque and abolition of the caretaker government system. The BNP leader joined the hunger strike at noon that began at 10:15am and continued till 6:00 pm. Leaders and activists of BNP and its associated bodies joined the mass hunger strike. Apart from the leaders of four- party alliance, representatives of Liberal Democratic Party and a few other parties joined there while former president of Bikalpa Dhara AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury extended support to the hunger strike. Khaleda, a former prime minister, asked the law enforcing agencies including the police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and the government officials to stop repression and harassment of the opposition leaders and workers. If you don't stop, be ready to face dire consequences in future," she warned. Dwelling on the 15th amendment to the constitution, the BNP chief said if voted to power, her party would throw away the amended version that abolished caretaker government and brought a few other fundamental changes. She castigated the government for the police attack on Farroque and said its main target was to kill him as he raised voice against its corruption and misdeeds. "Those who raised voice against the government's corruption or unethical activities, were either murdered or sent to jail," she said. The leader of the opposition in parliament blasted the ruling Awami League for what she said destroying democracy in Bangladesh. "As the government doesn't believe in democracy, it is obstructing the programmes of the opposition. Earlier, it destroyed democracy in 1975. And this very Awami League again did the same in 2011," Khaleda Zia said. She termed the ruling Awami League a traitor saying that the country and its people are not safe under the rule of this government. On the proposed dialogue on caretaker issue, the opposition leader said her party will definitely discuss with the ruling party over who can be the chief adviser provided the government makes clear statement about the continuation of the system of caretaker government. "We are observing token hunger strike. But thousands of people of the country are starving due to skyrocketing price hike of essentials. People will get food when Awami League is forced to quit the state power," she mentioned. BNP chairperson said the ruling Awami Leage has completely failed to implement its electoral manifestos. "People now want to get rid of Awami League," she said. She blamed the treasury bench for making parliament ineffective and dysfunctional. Khaleda Zia said the country's people are now hostage to a certain district — Gopalganj. "The government installed Gopalganj district's people at its every sector including administration and police department," she mentioned. Referring to the Viqarunninnesa noon school and College's recent incident, she asked the principal and other members of the governing body to resign. Khaleda Zia also said the guardians of the students to take to the streets if the government fails to take immediate necessary measure against the perpetrators. She said country's democracy is now being trampled under the police boots. She called upon the people from all walks of life to come forward and build up strong resistance against what she terms the fascist government. Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) led by its Presidium Member Redwan Ahmed and Joint Secretary General Shahadat Hossain expressed solidarity with BNP and presented a bouquet to Khaleda Zia. Bangladesh Jatiya Party Chairman and lawmaker Andalib Rahman Partho, JAGPA President Shafiul Alam Prodhan, Shawkat Hossain Nilu of National People's Party, Zebel Rahman of National Awami Party and Golam Mortoza of National Democratic Party also joined the programme. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Acting Chief Makbul Ahmed, Acting Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam, Assistant Secretaries General Abdur Razak and Shafiqur Rahman, and metropolitan unit chief Rafiqul Islam Khan, Khelafat-e-Majlish Chairman Moulana Mohammad Ishaq, and Labour Party Acting Chairman Meer Mostafizur Rahman also attended the programme. BNP standing committee members Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar, Mahbubur Rahman, Brig Gen (retd) Hannan Shah, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP Vice-chairmen Abdullah Al Noman and Sadeque Hossain Khoka, BNP chairperson's advisor Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, party's joint secretaries general Aman Ullah Aman, Barkatullah Bulu and Mizanur Rahman Minu, Finance Secretary Abdus Salam and Jubo Dal President Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal were present on the podium. Noted singers Monir Khan, Baby Naznin, Rizia Parvin and the JASAS activists rendered party song and `gano sangeet' at the venue. BNP leaders Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie MP, ABM Ashrafuddin Nizan MP and Swechchhasebak Dal President Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, among others, spoke. Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque, also BNP publicity secretary, received serious injuries as he was mercilessly beaten up by truncheon-wielding police near the Sangsad Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area in the city on July 6, the first day of the opposition's countrywide 48-hour hartal. |

After aid cut, US steps up drone strikes Posted: 12 Jul 2011 09:12 PM PDT
MIRANSHAH: At least 45 suspected militants were killed by missiles launched by US drone aircraft in Pakistan's northwest, local intelligence officials said on Tuesday, one of the largest death tolls to date in the controversial air bombing campaign. Coming a day after Washington announced an $800 million delay in military assistance amid worsening US-Pakistan ties, the attacks could exacerbate tension between the two uneasy allies in the war against militants. The attacks started on Monday night, when remotely piloted drones fired nine missiles into a militant compound and at a vehicle in North Waziristan, killing 25 suspected insurgents, local intelligence officials said. Another strike hours later in South Waziristan killed five suspected militants. Then on Tuesday morning, a drone fired two missiles at another compound in North Waziristan. "The missiles were fired as militants sitting in a vehicle were entering into a house used by them as a hideout," an intelligence official said, adding that 15 militants were killed in the strike. "The house is on fire." There was no independent confirmation of the death tolls, and militants often dispute official death figures. It was the second-largest death toll in a day in the unacknowledged US drone campaign against militants in Pakistan's northwest. In June 2009, about 70 suspected militants were killed in a drone attack in South Waziristan. Most of the strikes have been concentrated in South and, especially, North Waziristan, mountainous tribal regions on the Afghan border that shelter militant groups friendly with Pakistan but who are attacking US and Nato forces in Afghanistan. "Of course the number of casualties is very high and it will add to the already strained relationship," a senior Pakistani security official said. Washington has been pushing Pakistan to mount an offensive against these militant sanctuaries for years, but Pakistan has resisted, saying it must consolidate its gains against Taliban militants elsewhere first. The United States has stepped up drone attacks in response to Pakistan's perceived recalcitrance. |
Man kills daughter for hanging out with boyfriends Posted: 12 Jul 2011 09:11 PM PDT
NEW DELHI: A man bludgeoned his 18-year-old daughter to death in northwest Delhi during an argument over her hanging out with boys and spending time in malls. Police said the murder took place "in the heat of the moment" after the girl had returned home from a park at 10.30pm. The accused, Vishnu Bahadur Thapa, 53, a Nepali national who came to the capital four years ago, told the cops that he was fed up with his daughter's ways and the two would often get into fights. Thapa, a mason, had recently changed his residence, moving to Begumpur in Rohini, in the hope that his daughter Shanti would stop meeting neighbourhood boys. But when she again returned late on the night of July 5, he started admonishing her. "Shanti became furious and picked a piece of brick to hit him. In the fit of anger, Thapa hit her on the nose which left the girl bleeding. As she bent over, he hit her on the head with a stone and beat her with a stick," B S Jaiswal, deputy commissioner of police (outer) said. The girl collapsed and died on the spot. After some time, he wrapped her body in a bedsheet spread on the floor by her daughter for sleeping, lifted the body on his shoulders and threw it on the pavement near a vacant house, police said. The police arrested Thapa after the girl's body was found at a DDA plot on July 8. "After identifying the girl, the family was asked to join investigations. During sustained interrogation, Thapa confessed that his daughter Shanti had at many instances turned violent when he tried to stop her from talking to the boys of colony," said Karunakaran, additional DCP (Outer). Thapa had brought his family to Delhi from Palpa in Nepal three years ago. "Thapa told us that a number of locals had told him about his daughter's activities and advised him to keep her 'under control'. He was very tense over this," Jaiswal said. |

Envoys say Gaddafi ready to go: France Posted: 12 Jul 2011 09:29 AM PDT
PARIS: France's foreign minister said today Paris has had contact with emissaries from Muammar Gaddafi who say the embattled Libyan strongman is "prepared to leave." Alain Juppe said that while the contacts do not constitute proper negotiations, "everyone (involved in Libya's civil war) has contacts with everyone else. The Libyan regime sends its messengers all over, to Turkey, to New York, to Paris. "We receive emissaries who are saying, 'Gaddafi is prepared to leave. Let's discuss it.'" France was instrumental in launching the Nato-led operation of airstrikes against Gaddafi's forces, in a UN-mandated mission to protect civilians resisting his four-decade regime. French officials have insisted that Gaddafi's giving up power is key to ending the hostilities, which began in mid-March, and Juppe said that more and more countries are now in agreement on that point. "There is a consensus on how to end the crisis, which is that Gaddafi has to leave power," Juppe said. "That (consensus) was absolutely not a given two or three months ago. "The question is no longer whether Gaddafi is going to leave power, but when and how," he added. Parliament is due to vote later today on whether to continue French participation in the operations in Libya. French law requires parliamentary approval for all military campaigns lasting more than four months. The Libya operation has wide support among lawmakers from both the governing conservative party and among the opposition socialists, and the vote is expected to pass with a broad majority. (AP) |
US ran fake vaccine project in Abbottabad in hunt for bin Laden: Report Posted: 12 Jul 2011 02:38 AM PDT
LONDON: US intelligence launched a fake vaccination drive in the Pakistan town where it believed Osama bin Laden was hiding in an effort to gather DNA from members of his family, the Guardian reported on Tuesday. CIA officials recruited a senior local doctor to organise the campaign after it tracked down a bin Laden courier to what turned out to be the al-Qaida fugitive's compound in the town of Abbottabad, the British newspaper said. Before launching the high-risk operation against bin Laden, US officials wanted to test DNA samples from people living at the compound with a sample that they had from his sister. Doctor Shakil Afridi, who has since been arrested by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency, launched the programme in Abbottabad's poorest area to make it appear more credible. The project then moved swiftly to the Bilal Town suburb, where bin Laden was residing. "The whole thing was totally irregular," a Pakistani official told the newspaper. "Bilal Town is a well-to-do area. Why would you choose that place to give free vaccines?" A nurse managed to gain access to the compound but Pakistani sources claim she failed to obtain any DNA samples, the Guardian reported. Bin Laden was killed on May 2 in a raid that soured US-Pakistan relations. The Pakistani military on Monday insisted it was capable of fighting Islamic militants without US assistance, hitting back after Washington said it would suspend $800 million worth of security aid. |

The victims were students of Abu Torab High School, Abu Torab Fazil Madrasa and Professor Kamal Uddin Chowdhury College at Abu Torab village in the upazila. UK phone hacking: Probe may reach Murdoch door Posted: 11 Jul 2011 12:37 PM PDT
LONDON: News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch may personally get embroiled in the probe into the scandal involving his now defunct British tabloid the News of the World if it emerges that he knew about emails showing several of its journalists hacking mobile phones and making payments to police officers. Murdoch's UK subsidiary, News International, handed over the 2007 emails to police last week. The key question now is whether Les Hinton, one of Murdoch's closest colleagues for 50 years, was aware of the emails in 2007, as a section of British media suspect he was. If that's borne out, then Australia-born American media magnate would have been sure to know also. It also emerged on Monday that the tabloid purchased royal family members' personal contact details from a police officer deployed for their protection. In effect, Queen Elizabeth's security was allegedly compromised. This is a serious offence under the UK law and anyone who knew about this and took no action is liable to prosecution and if found guilty likely to be imprisoned. This is apart from the serious criminality of tapping phones. The tabloid hacked cell phones of a number of celebrities, including film stars, politicians and sports figures. The emails revealed the extent of hacking and also that the tabloid's operatives reportedly deleted messages from a 13-year-old murder victim's phone giving her parents false hope that she was still alive. This particularly fuelled outrage and led to advertizers withdrawing ads forcing the 168- year-old tabloid's closure. |
Hitler ordered sex toys for his troops during WW-II Posted: 11 Jul 2011 01:48 AM PDT
LONDON: Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler had ordered sex toys for his troops as many of them were contracting sex diseases from French prostitutes, records have revealed. While researching the history of Barbie, which was based on a post-war German sex doll, author Graeme Donald uncovered Hitler's secretive "Borghild Project". Under the World War II project that began in 1940, Nazi scientists developed the "synthetic comforters" for the German soldiers who were enjoying themselves a bit too much in Paris. The problem was so bad it was keeping many of the troops from their frontline duties, the Sun reported. Hitler conceived the project following a report from SS chief Heinrich Himmler, who wrote: "The greatest danger in Paris is the widespread and uncontrolled presence of whores, picking up clients in bars, dance halls and other places. "It is our duty to prevent soldiers from risking their health for the sake of a quick adventure." According to Donald, Hitler personally approved the plan for the blonde and blue-eyed "gynoid" dolls, which were small enough to fit into a backpack. They were tested by soldiers in Nazi-occupied Jersey. Himmler was so impressed that he ordered 50 for his own troops, Donald found from the records. But in 1942 the project was axed when German soldiers refused to carry the dolls because of the potential embarrassment if they were captured by the British. "In the end the idea fizzled out and the place where they were made and all the dolls were destroyed in the bombing of Dresden," Donald said. |

Witnesses said the bomber blew himself up near a group of policemen deployed to guard the rally. The blast hit an office of the water and power utility located near the venue of the rally, witnesses told the media. Police officials said at least six persons, including three policemen, were killed in the attack. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals. PML-Q workers said senior leader Amir Muqam was safe as he was not at the venue at the time of the blast. Death toll in UP train accident rises to 53Death toll in UP train accident rises to 53 Posted: 10 Jul 2011 08:40 PM PDT
FATEHPUR (UP): The death toll of Delhi-bound Kalka Mail's derailment on Sunday went up to 53 with 15 more bodies, including that of a Swedish national, being recovered from the mangled compartments of the ill-fated train. "53 bodies, including that of a Swedish national, have been recovered so far. About 250 are undergoing treatment at a hospital here," SP Fatehpur Ram Bharose said, adding those who were seriously injured have been referred to Kanpur. Bharose said the deceased Swedish national has been identified as Wick from the statement of his injured compatriot Oscar, who was also travelling with him. There is one more passenger from Sweden, who is reportedly missing, the SP said, quoting Oscar. The derailment took place at 12.20 pm yesterday when the packed train from Howrah reached near Malwa station, nearly 120 kms from Lucknow. The train was moving at a speed of 108 km/hour. Rescue operations continued throughout the night to extricate the trapped passengers and bodies from the damaged AC and other compartments. "By tomorrow morning, the Howrah-Delhi route should be cleared off," Railway Board Chairman Vinay Mittal said, adding that an inquiry by the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (Lucknow) Prashant Kumar has been ordered. Mittal said there was no fault in the track and the cabinman had told him that when the train was close to pole number 927/23, its engine started shaking and emitting smoke, soon after which the mishap took place. According to survivors and eyewitnesses, the driver applied emergency brakes. The driver himself is critically injured and not in a position to say what made him apply the brakes. Railway officials confirm that the train was hurtling at the maximum speed of around 108-110 km per hour and did not rule out sabotage. Traffic was hit in the busy Delhi-Howrah corridor with 13 trains cancelled and 25 diverted. |
Call for News review in Australia after hacking scandal Posted: 10 Jul 2011 01:47 AM PDT
The phone hacking scandal rocking Rupert Murdoch's News Corp threatened to spread to Australia Saturday with calls for an official inquiry, which could hurt his play for a major television contract. Murdoch's global News International empire had its humble beginnings in Australia, and the Australian-born media baron is seeking to expand his already vast local holdings with a bid for the public broadcaster's international arm. Claims that Murdoch's News of the World, Britain's biggest-selling Sunday paper, hacked into the voicemails of a murdered girl and the families of dead soldiers have already cast a shadow over his bid for British network BSkyB. And a call from Australia's influential Greens party for an inquiry into local Murdoch firm News Limited could put a similar deal for the Aus$223 million Australia Network, an international television service, into doubt. Greens leader Bob Brown lodged a notice in parliament late Thursday that he intended to call for an official inquiry into News Limited to satisfy the Australian public that its work practices did not echo those used in London. When parliament resumes in mid- August following the winter recess, Brown said he would urge the communications minister to order a review of Murdoch's Australian group, which has a virtual monopoly over the newspaper industry. "The operations here come under the umbrella of News International and we've got greater newspaper ownership concentration than any other country, with eight of the (nation's) 12 metropolitan dailies owned by Rupert Murdoch," Brown told AFP. "It's important that we establish beyond statements of News International itself that the methods that have been used and have outraged the world at News of the World haven't been and won't be part of newsgathering in Australia." There is no "fit and proper person" test required to run Australia Network, which is partly funded by the Australian government and screens in more than 44 countries across the Asia-Pacific and the Indian subcontinent. News Limited has distanced itself from the phone hacking scandal, with chief John Hartigan strongly condemning the claims and expressing his confidence that "the practices that have been uncovered in the UK do not exist in Australia." But Brown said management assurances were not enough, given the enormity of the scandal, and it was important "for the media itself that the air is cleared" so the Australian public could be reassured. "We have to -- and I do assume -- that nothing untoward has happened in Australia," Brown said. "But I think it is such a huge implosion of ethics in the biggest- selling newspaper in the UK that we just need to sensibly, for the public good and reassurance, make sure that Australia's been totally free of any such methods." Brown's minority Greens party has an unprecedented amount of influence in Australian politics, holding deciding votes in both the lower and upper houses after taking a record 11.46 percent of the vote in last year's elections. "These are very serious questions, and it's very clear that if this were a political scandal involving a politician or political party the Murdoch press would be relentless in ascribing responsibility to the people at the top," said Brown, whose own relationship with News Limited is famously strained. |
Thank you and goodbye, says last edition of 168- year-old News of the World Posted: 10 Jul 2011 01:30 AM PDT
Journalists crafted the newspaper's own obituary before sending tabloid's last edition to press, apologizing for letting its readers down but stopping short of acknowledging recent allegations. LONDON: Britain's best-selling Sunday tabloid the News of the World signed off with a simple front page message _ "THANK YOU & GOODBYE" _ leaving the media establishment here reeling from the expanding phone- hacking scandal that brought down the muckraking newspaper after 168 years. Journalists crafted the newspaper's own obituary before sending the tabloid's final edition to the printing presses on Saturday night, apologizing for letting its readers down but stopping short of acknowledging recent allegations that staff paid police for information. "We praised high standards, we demanded high standards but, as we are now only too painfully aware, for a period of a few years up to 2006 some who worked for us, or in our name, fell shamefully short of those standards," read a message posted on the tabloid's website. "Quite simply, we lost our way. Phones were hacked, and for that this newspaper is truly sorry." Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corp. media empire owns the paper, will arrive in London on Sunday on a scheduled visit, a person familiar with his itinerary said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. Buying the News of the World in 1969 gave the Australian-born Murdoch his first foothold in Britain's media. He went on to snap up several other titles, gaining almost unparalleled influence in British politics through the far-reaching power of his papers' headlines. Now he is facing a maelstrom of criticism and outrage over the sequence of events set off by allegations the paper's journalists paid police for information and hacked into the voicemails of young murder victims and the grieving families of dead soldiers. The recent revelations culminated in the decision to close the paper and put 200 journalists out of work _ but the move failed to stem broader questions about corruption at the newspaper and press regulation in the UK. The sordid affair has played out at breakneck pace in the media and prompted soul-searching at the highest levels of officialdom. Prime Minister David Cameron has called for a new press regulation system and pledged a public inquiry into what went wrong; the head of Murdoch's UK newspaper operations has alluded that more revelations are yet to come. As the News of the World's final issue went to press, Assistant Police Commissioner John Yates expressed his "extreme regret" that he did not act to reopen police inquiries into phone hacking two years ago. In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph, he said "it's clear I could have done more." But Murdoch has opted to remain largely silent amid the fallout, issuing one official statement describing the allegations as "deplorable and unacceptable." He spoke briefly to reporters in Sun Valley, Idaho, on Saturday, where he is attending a media conference, to back the leadership of his UK news operations. The final edition of the tabloid hits newsstands on Sunday, and the newspaper's front and back pages are covered with a collage of images of past exclusives and scoops. The front page bears an epitaph, "the world's greatest newspaper 1843 - 2011" and a smaller headline with the words: "After 168 years, we finally say a sad but very proud farewell to our 7.5m loyal readers." Throughout the day, journalists at the tabloid expressed their sadness and pride in working for an iconic news brand. Video of the newsroom showed desk-bound journalists tapping away at keyboards beneath television screens broadcasting images and pictures of their task, and plight. Small clues gave the tone of the London newsroom away _ from a commemorative T-shirt bearing a "Goodbye, cruel News of the World, I'm leaving you today" worn by one staffer. The paper's editor, Colin Myler, offered words of encouragement and sympathy to his staff on a "very difficult day." "It's not where we want to be and it's not where we deserve to be," he said in a memo to staff seen by Britain's Press Association. "But I know we will produce a paper to be proud of." Helen Moss, a news and features editor who offered refreshments to journalists camped outside the tabloid's headquarters, described an "extremely emotional" newsroom. Much of the emotion continued to focus on News International _ a subsidiary of Murdoch's News Corp. _ which took the decision to jettison the paper on Thursday after the new allegations sparked a fierce backlash and the flight of advertisers. When asked whose decision it was to close the paper Murdoch said, "It was a collective decision." The scandal exploded this week after it was reported that the News of the World had hacked the mobile phone of 13-year-old murder victim Milly Dowler in 2002 while her family and police were desperately searching for her. News of the World operatives reportedly deleted some messages from the phone's voicemail, giving the girl's parents false hope that she was still alive. That ignited public outrage far beyond any previous reaction to press intrusion into the lives of politicians and celebrities, which the paper has acknowledged and for which it has paid compensation to some prominent victims, including actress Sienna Miller. Revelations that journalists paid police for information added fuel to the fire, prompting calls for a boycott and causing dozens of companies to pull their advertising from the paper amid fears they would be tainted by association. James Murdoch _ tipped by many as a likely successor to his father _ then announced Thursday that this Sunday's edition of the tabloid would be its last and all revenue from it will go to "good causes." The closure was seen by some as a desperate attempt by the media conglomerate to stem negative fallout and thus save its 12 billion-pound ($19 billion) deal to take over satellite broadcaster British Sky Broadcasting. But the British government has signaled that deal will be delayed because of the crisis and the scandal has continued to unfold with the announcement of three arrests linked to the matter on Friday. Andy Coulson _ a former News of the World editor and ex- communications chief to Prime Minister David Cameron _ was arrested Friday, as was Clive Goodman, an ex-News of the World royal reporter, and an unidentified 63-year-old man. All three have since been released on bail. The developments have turned up the heat on Britain's media industry amid concerns a police investigation won't stop with the News of the World. It has also cast new scrutiny on the cozy relationship between British politicians and the powerful Murdoch empire, putting the media baron's company on the defensive. Many journalists and media watchers have expressed astonishment that Rebekah Brooks, who was editor of News of the World when some of the hacking allegedly occurred, was keeping her job at head of News Corp.'s U.K. newspaper operations while the paper's 200 employees were laid off. When asked Saturday if Brooks continues to have his support, Rupert Murdoch replied simply: "Total." "We already apologized," he said. "We've been let down by people ... the paper let down its readers." Brooks told lawmakers she had "no knowledge whatsoever" of the Milly Dowler hacking or any other case while she was editor, according to a letter published by Britain's home affairs select committee on Saturday. "I also want to reassure you that the practice of phone hacking is not continuing at the News of the World," she said in response to the committee's request for new evidence. "For the avoidance of doubt, I should add that we have no reason to believe that any phone hacking occurred at any other of our titles." While she has been portrayed as a villain in the unfolding story, Brooks _ with strong connections to British politics and decades of experience behind her _ has insisted she is the right person to lead News International through the crisis. Upping the ante, the Church of England threatened to pull nearly 4 million pounds of investments from News Corp. if it "does not hold senior executives to account...for the gross failures of management at the News of the World." The church's ethical investment advisory group said Saturday it wrote to News Corp. saying closing News of the World was not a "sufficient response" to the "utterly reprehensible and unethical" practices uncovered at the tabloid. As he led the News of the World's staff out of the building to cheers and applause, Myler, the editor, paid tribute to his team's professionalism and thanked the tabloid's readers. "In the best tradition" of Britain's newspapers, he told the gathered press scrum, "we are going to the pub." |
