Bangladeshi has brick tied to penis as punishment

Posted: 21 Jul 2011 08:06 AM PDT

DHAKA: Bangladeshi police said on Thursday they were investigating the case of a man forced to parade naked through his village with a brick tied to his penis as punishment for kidnapping and marrying a minor. The punishment was meted out Saturday to the 30-year-old man by the local council in a village 30 kilometres (18 miles) south of Dhaka. Police said he had kidnapped and then forcibly married a 12-year- old girl, who later managed to escape. "The council chief and some village elders beat him and made him parade with a brick tied to his penis at a river ghat (steps) under the full gaze of at least 200 people," police sub-inspector Binoy Krishna Kar said. Village courts are legal in Bangladesh but only empowered to settle disputes related to land ownership, inheritance and other minor issues. They are proscribed from handing down physical punishment. The latest incident came a week after the global rights monitor Human Rights Watch released a statement highlighting abuses committed by local councils which are often the result of religious edicts or fatwas. The group urged Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority nation of 142 million people, to take "urgent" measures to prevent such cases, which have been blamed for the deaths of dozens of women in recent years.

Atlantis lands, ends NASA's shuttle era

Posted: 21 Jul 2011 08:04 AM PDT

CAPE CANAVERAL (Florida): The space shuttle Atlantis glided home through a clear moonlit sky on Thursday to complete a 13-day cargo run to the International Space Station and a 30-year odyssey for NASA's shuttle program. Commander Chris Ferguson gently steered the 100-ton spaceship high overhead, then nose-dived toward the swamp- surrounded landing strip at the Kennedy Space Center, a few miles (km) from where Atlantis will go on display as a museum piece. Double sonic booms shattered the predawn silence around the space center, the last time residents will hear the sound of a shuttle coming home. Ferguson eased Atlantis onto the runway at 5:57 a.m. EDT (0957 GMT), ending a 5.2 million-mile (8.4 million-km) journey and closing a key chapter in human space flight history. "Mission complete, Houston," Ferguson radioed to Mission Control. Astronaut Barry Wilmore from Mission Control answered back, "We'll take this opportunity to congratulate you Atlantis, as well as the thousands of passionate individuals across this great space-faring nation who truly empowered this incredible spacecraft, which for three decades has inspired millions around the globe." Atlantis' return from the 135th shuttle mission capped a 30-year program that made spaceflight appear routine, despite two fatal accidents that killed 14 astronauts and destroyed two of NASA's five spaceships. The last accident investigation board recommended the shuttles be retired after construction was finished on the space station, a $100 billion project of 16 nations. That milestone was reached this year. Details of a follow-on program are still pending, but the overall objective is to build new spaceships that can travel beyond the station's 250-mile (400-km) orbit and send astronauts to the moon, asteroids and other destinations in deep space.

Katrina's item number for Salman

Posted: 21 Jul 2011 08:03 AM PDT

Katrina Kaif will be a part of Salman Khan's forthcoming film Bodyguard. And she won't just do an ordinary cameo. The actress is all set to sizzle in an item number that will play during the opening credits of the film. In fact, after her success with Sheila Ki Jawaani, it was Salman who requested his ex- girlfriend to be a part of the opening-credit item number. Needless, to say, leading lady Kareena Kapoor hasn't taken this news too well. A source revealed, "When Salman asked Katrina to be a part of Bodyguard, she didn't even blink before saying 'yes'. But on hearing Salman's grand plans for the item number Katrina got a little unsure. Salman's brief was simple, an item song for the opening credits that would put Sheila to shame. Considering Kareena was the leading lady of the film, Katrina feared that this might not go down too well with her. However, when Kat told Salman about her cause of worry, he said that he'll take care of Bebo." The item number in question has been assigned to Himesh Reshammiya for the music and Ganesh Acharya for the scintillating steps. Interestingly, both Himesh and Ganesh are Salman protégés. And that's not all. The item number in question will be on the lines of James Bond opening credits. So Katrina has to now match up to the Bond girls for Bodyguard. "It's a challenge for Katrina to take the item song beyond Sheila Ki Jawaani. She has already started preparing for it. She's been watching the James Bond credit songs in Goldfinger, Octopussy and other Bond films to get an idea of the same," said the source. Despite Salman's claims of taking care of Bebo, the leading lady is not too happy about Katrina's intrusion in the film. Bebo who had maintained for the past few years that she would like to work in single heroine films, apparently is miffed with the addition of an item number to be picturised on Kaif. This however, seems not to have affected the filmmakers' decision. When contacted, the spokesperson for the film confirmed that Katrina, indeed will be performing the opening- credit item number inspired by Bond films.

Make a lot of noise for great sex

Posted: 21 Jul 2011 08:01 AM PDT

Let go of your inhibitions, get more vocal and play some games. Read on to find out what else can help you add that zing to your love life... Contrary to popular belief, enjoying a great sex life is not all about possessing technical skills. What is more important is to be able to let go and enjoy the act with your partner. Most people will agree that the key to having fun in bed is to have an equally enthusiastic lover. You need to be able to shut out the rest of the world and focus on enjoying yourself with your partner. Forget about the worries of the day and just concentrate on having a great sensual experience. Here are some tips to help you let go in bed: Live in the moment Create the perfect romantic ambience for you and your lover. Make sure that your space is clutter-free so that while you are getting intimate, your mind does not wander to household bills or pending office work. It's hard to be unrestrained in bed if you are concerned about other things. Ensure that there are no distractions. Turn the lights dim, put the phone off the hook and play some soft music; anything that can help bring out the passion. Concentrate solely on the intimacy that you and your partner share. Grab your lover close and stroke your partner's hair. Once you reach a certain comfort level, you will be all set for a wild night. Make some noise You don't have to be silent when you and your partner are having sex. Flirting a little and whispering sweet nothings can add to the mood. Turn your partner on by telling him/her what you like. There is no need to feel inhibited and sharing each other's thoughts only serves to increase intimacy. Say something naughty or seductive to your partner. Try doing something different in bed. The whole idea is to let go of the awkwardness and bring out the desire in you. Just remember not to be fake and learn to let go of yourself a little. Play games To truly enjoy yourself while having sex, you need to be an active participant and adopt an erotic attitude. Why wait for your lover to always take the lead? Instead, try being the boss in the bedroom for once and let your lover know exactly what you want. Being in charge will give you an added sense of confidence and a great rush. It will catch your lover by surprise. Try something new in bed from your usual routine. Watch an erotic film together or purchase some sexy lingerie that will make you feel more attractive. Dress up as a character from your partner's fantasy or try feeding each other fingerfoods . There are no hard and fast rules — just let your imagination run free. Get bolder Research says that individuals who are submissive during sex experience lower levels of arousal. When having sex with your lover, try to be at ease. Forget about how you look or what he/she may be thinking and just be yourself. Surrender yourself to the moment and you will realise that you and your lover can have a real good time in bed.

‘Gaddafi could stay in Libya’ Dozens of rebels killed in battle for Brega

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 01:08 PM PDT

PARIS: Muammar Gaddafi could remain in Libya if he relinquishes power, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said on Wednesday, in what appeared to be a fresh drive to find a political solution to the dragging conflict. Juppe, asked during an interview on LCI television whether countries involved in the Libyan crisis could consider letting Gaddafi remain as part of a way out of the crisis, replied: "One of the scenarios effectively envisaged is that he stays in Libya on one condition which I repeat—that he very clearly steps aside from Libyan political life." "A ceasefire depends on Gaddafi committing clearly and formally to surrender his military and civilian roles," said Juppe. Two members of Libya's rebel Transitional National Council were due to meet French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris on Wednesday. France was the first country to publicly recognize the council and the first to launch air strikes against Gaddafi's military machine when now Nato-led operations began in March. Meanwhile, a doctor at a Libyan hospital says more than 50 rebels have been killed in six days of fighting with government forces over the strategic eastern oil town of Brega. The new toll comes after Mohammed Idris, a doctor at the Ajdabiya hospital where the casualties were taken, raised the number killed in Tuesday's fighting to 27, with 83 wounded. Idris said Wednesday that most had been shot in the head and chest.

Israel ready to talk in Jerusalem, Ramallah: Netanyahu

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 01:05 PM PDT

JERUSALEM: Israel is willing to hold peace talks with the Palestinians immediately, in Jerusalem or even Ramallah, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in excerpts of an interview released on Wednesday. Speaking to Arabic-language television station Al-Arabiya, Netanyahu also denied that Israel wanted to see Syrian President Bashar al-Assad remain in power, and acknowledged that he had held secret peace talks with Damascus in the past. The Israeli premier blamed a stalemate in talks with the Palestinians on their leadership. "Everything is on the table," he said. "But we need to get to the table." He said the Palestinian leadership had in the past not wanted to conclude negotiations, and now it was unwilling to even restart talks. "I'm prepared to negotiate with president (Mahmud) Abbas directly for peace between our two peoples right now. We can do it here in my home in Jerusalem, we can do it in Ramallah (in the West Bank), we can do it anywhere," he said. Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians have been on hold since late September 2010, shortly after Washington relaunched the first direct negotiations between the two sides for nearly two years. The talks ground to a halt when Israel's partial freeze on settlement construction expired and Netanyahu declined to renew it. The Palestinians say they will not hold talks while Israel builds on land they want for a future state. The prospects for new talks have been thrown into further jeopardy by a reconciliation deal between Abbas's Fatah party and Hamas, which rules Gaza. Netanyahu said it was impossible to seek peace with any group that does not recognise Israel's right to exist. "If people say no, the state of Israel shouldn't exist, it should be wiped off the face of the earth, the way Iran or Hezbollah or Hamas say, there's not much place to go." Asked about Syria, Netanyahu denied media reports that Israel wanted to see the regime stay in power. But he acknowledged that he had held peace talks with Damascus in the past and was concerned that anti-regime protests could lead to a rise in the long-quiet border between Israel and Syria. "We don't intervene in what happens in Syria, but we obviously would like to have peaceful relations," he said. "Several people tried including myself in secret negotiations to move towards a formal peace," he added.

Better go to PakistanHasina_ to Khaleda over remarks on constitution

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 01:03 PM PDT

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said those who can say they would throw away the national constitution and throw it to dustbin should go to Pakistan, as they do not believe in sovereign and independent Bangladesh. "The opposition leader (Khaleda Zia) has said that she would throw away the constitution and some of her associates have wanted to throw it to dustbins. How audacious they are! They do not believe in the country's independence and sovereignty. They should go to Pakistan," she said. Hasina said these in her opening remarks at the Awami League Central Working Committee meeting held at her official Ganobhaban residence in the afternoon. Strongly commending the opposition leader's remark on the constitution, the prime minister said that if she (opposition leader) would have respect for the constitution, she could not have made such remarks. "She has forgotten that 30 lakh people had sacrificed their lives and two lakh mothers and sisters their honour to attain the constitution of independent Bangladesh," she added. Referring to a condolence message of the then prime minister Khaleda Zia on the death of a Pakistani General, Hasina said that being a prime minister she (Khaleda) had sent a condolence message on the death of a Pakistani General. "We all know where her (Khaleda) heart lies." She alleged that the opposition leader and Jamaat are trying to save the war criminals and the killers of Ivy Rahman and others who lost their lives in the August 21 grenade attack. "But they would never be able to save the killers and the war criminals," she said. The prime minister said that during the Awami League's upcoming sitting with the Election Commission, the party will emphasise on further strengthening it. "The Election Commission is independent now. It will be further strengthened to arrange elections in free and fair manner." She said the Awami league government never tries to influence the Election Commission. Hasina said that with the 15th amendment to the constitution, avenues of grabbing the state power unconstitutionally that had began after the killing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman have been stopped forever. She said: "People have got their power back through this (15th) amendment. This amendment has safeguarded the people's empowerment." The premier said the opposition leader is now "crying" for the caretaker form of government, but when the Awami League in the past spoke about this, she (the opposition leader) had commented that none is neutral except a mad person or a kid. Issuing a stern warning against hoarding to increase prices of essentials during the Ramadan, she said: "We are keeping close watch so that none can hoard food to make extra profit at the cost of public suffering." —UNB

US exposes ISI subversion of Kashmir cause

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 01:06 PM PDT

Jul 19, 2011, 11.43pm IST TNN [ Chidanand Rajghatta ] WASHINGTON: Federal authorities on Monday arrested a prominent US-based pro-Pakistan activist associated with the Kashmiri separatist movement, accusing him of funneling money from the Pakistani spy agency ISI to lobby US decision-makers. In the process, the Obama administration's law enforcement brigade also blew open the Pakistan and its spy agency's two-decade long subversion of the so-called Kashmir cause. The FBI swooped down on the Virginia residence of Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, a well-known representative of Kashmiri separatists in the US and detained him on charges of ''participating in a long-term conspiracy to act as agents of the Pakistani government in the United States without disclosing their affiliation with the Pakistani government as required by law.'' Or simply put, he served as a frontman for ISI's Kashmir agenda. Another individual, Zaheer Ahmed, like Fai a US citizen, was also similarly charged, but he is at large and believed to be in Pakistan, according to US authorities. Fai has been a familiar and prominent figure in Washington DC for nearly two decades, lobbying Kashmiri separatist cause as executive director of the Kashmiri-American Council (KAC) and dallying with senators and congressmen. US authorities now say the KAC was just an ISI front, funded by Pakistan's spy agency. The FBI affidavit alleges that, although the KAC held itself out to be a Kashmiri organization run by Kashmiris and financed by Americans, ''it is one of three 'Kashmir Centers' that are actually run by elements of the Pakistani government, including ISI.'' The two other Kashmir Centers are in London, England, and Brussels, Belgium. According to the affidavit, a confidential witness told investigators that he participated in a scheme to obscure the origin of money transferred by Pakistan's ISI to Fai to use as a lobbyist for the KAC in furtherance of Pakistani government interests. The witness explained that the money was transferred to Fai through Ahmad, an American living in Pakistan. A second confidential witness told investigators that the ''ISI created the KAC to propagandize on behalf of the government of Pakistan with the goal of uniting Kashmir.'' This witness said ''ISI's sponsorship and control of KAC were secret and that ISI had been directing Fai's activities for the past 25 years.'' The FBI affidavit alleges that Fai has "acted at the direction of and with the financial support of the Pakistani government for more than 20 years." Four Pakistani government handlers have directed Fai's US. activities and Fai has been in touch with his handlers more than 4,000 times since June 2008, according to the FBI. The affidavit also alleges that Fai repeatedly submitted annual KAC strategy reports and budgetary requirements to his Pakistani government handlers for approval. One document entitled "Plan of Action of KAC / Kashmir Center for Fiscal Year 2009" laid out Fai's intended strategy to secure US. Congressional support in order to encourage the Executive Branch to support self-determination in Kashmir; his strategy to build new alliances in the State Department, the National Security Council, the Congress and the Pentagon, and to expand KAC's media efforts. According to the affidavit, Fai also set forth KAC's projected budgetary requirements from the Pakistani government for 2009, including $100,000 for contributions to members of Congress. Fai and the KAC have received at least $4 million from the Pakistani government since the mid-1990s through Ahmad and his funding network, the FBI said. The money is allegedly routed to Fai through Ahmad and a network of other individuals connected to Ahmad. Ahmad allegedly arranges for his contacts in the United States to provide money to Fai in return for repayment of those amounts in Pakistan.
