DHAKA: Bangladeshi police said on Thursday they were investigating the case of a man forced to parade naked through his village with a brick tied to his penis as punishment for kidnapping and marrying a minor. The punishment was meted out Saturday to the 30-year-old man by the local council in a village 30 kilometres (18 miles) south of Dhaka. Police said he had kidnapped and then forcibly married a 12-year- old girl, who later managed to escape. "The council chief and some village elders beat him and made him parade with a brick tied to his penis at a river ghat (steps) under the full gaze of at least 200 people," police sub-inspector Binoy Krishna Kar said. Village courts are legal in Bangladesh but only empowered to settle disputes related to land ownership, inheritance and other minor issues. They are proscribed from handing down physical punishment. The latest incident came a week after the global rights monitor Human Rights Watch released a statement highlighting abuses committed by local councils which are often the result of religious edicts or fatwas. The group urged Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority nation of 142 million people, to take "urgent" measures to prevent such cases, which have been blamed for the deaths of dozens of women in recent years. |

CAPE CANAVERAL (Florida): The space shuttle Atlantis glided home through a clear moonlit sky on Thursday to complete a 13-day cargo run to the International Space Station and a 30-year odyssey for NASA's shuttle program. Commander Chris Ferguson gently steered the 100-ton spaceship high overhead, then nose-dived toward the swamp- surrounded landing strip at the Kennedy Space Center, a few miles (km) from where Atlantis will go on display as a museum piece. Double sonic booms shattered the predawn silence around the space center, the last time residents will hear the sound of a shuttle coming home. Ferguson eased Atlantis onto the runway at 5:57 a.m. EDT (0957 GMT), ending a 5.2 million-mile (8.4 million-km) journey and closing a key chapter in human space flight history. "Mission complete, Houston," Ferguson radioed to Mission Control. Astronaut Barry Wilmore from Mission Control answered back, "We'll take this opportunity to congratulate you Atlantis, as well as the thousands of passionate individuals across this great space-faring nation who truly empowered this incredible spacecraft, which for three decades has inspired millions around the globe." Atlantis' return from the 135th shuttle mission capped a 30-year program that made spaceflight appear routine, despite two fatal accidents that killed 14 astronauts and destroyed two of NASA's five spaceships. The last accident investigation board recommended the shuttles be retired after construction was finished on the space station, a $100 billion project of 16 nations. That milestone was reached this year. Details of a follow-on program are still pending, but the overall objective is to build new spaceships that can travel beyond the station's 250-mile (400-km) orbit and send astronauts to the moon, asteroids and other destinations in deep space. |

Katrina Kaif will be a part of Salman Khan's forthcoming film Bodyguard. And she won't just do an ordinary cameo. The actress is all set to sizzle in an item number that will play during the opening credits of the film. In fact, after her success with Sheila Ki Jawaani, it was Salman who requested his ex- girlfriend to be a part of the opening-credit item number. Needless, to say, leading lady Kareena Kapoor hasn't taken this news too well. A source revealed, "When Salman asked Katrina to be a part of Bodyguard, she didn't even blink before saying 'yes'. But on hearing Salman's grand plans for the item number Katrina got a little unsure. Salman's brief was simple, an item song for the opening credits that would put Sheila to shame. Considering Kareena was the leading lady of the film, Katrina feared that this might not go down too well with her. However, when Kat told Salman about her cause of worry, he said that he'll take care of Bebo." The item number in question has been assigned to Himesh Reshammiya for the music and Ganesh Acharya for the scintillating steps. Interestingly, both Himesh and Ganesh are Salman protégés. And that's not all. The item number in question will be on the lines of James Bond opening credits. So Katrina has to now match up to the Bond girls for Bodyguard. "It's a challenge for Katrina to take the item song beyond Sheila Ki Jawaani. She has already started preparing for it. She's been watching the James Bond credit songs in Goldfinger, Octopussy and other Bond films to get an idea of the same," said the source. Despite Salman's claims of taking care of Bebo, the leading lady is not too happy about Katrina's intrusion in the film. Bebo who had maintained for the past few years that she would like to work in single heroine films, apparently is miffed with the addition of an item number to be picturised on Kaif. This however, seems not to have affected the filmmakers' decision. When contacted, the spokesperson for the film confirmed that Katrina, indeed will be performing the opening- credit item number inspired by Bond films. |
